Wiper Linkage Problem

Yesterday, in the snow in fact, my drivers side wiper stoped working. Looking at it, it sounds like it has come adrift from the wiper motor arm. The other side still works. Moving the defective wiper I can hear something clunking around. I've not got around to dealing with it but does the blower fan need to come out to get at it? All ideas appreciated!
Thanks,
Anthony

It is possible that your wiper arm splines have stripped, in which case it may not be absolutely necessary to remove the mechanism. Take the arm off, and see if the post turns. If not, you WILL need to remove the blower box in order to access the motor and linkage.

As a side note, this might be a good time to swotch the side that the wipers park on (if your car is LHD, that is). There's a technical article on the procedure here at the Pelican site:

Pop a few of your gauges out and look in with a flashlight. That will tell you for certain. I suspect the bushings in the linkage have broken allowing the link rod to come off the the pivot arm. Superman is right about blower removal, but it's relatively easy.

Thanks everyone for the help. Got the fresh air blower fan out the way and found the one of the linkage arms had been welded in the past as a means of avoiding getting a new one. The parts are being ordered to effect a proper repair!
Cheers,
Anthony
