964 oil leaks
Dear Sir(Madam),
I have a 964 C2 and am experiencing oil leaks. Please advise if I had cylinder head leaks. I have since fix the gaskets and it is still leaking. Thanks. |

Good Sir:
I think all air cooled Porsches leak oil to some degree. Is it leaking a little or a lot? Kindest regards, BB |

What year was the engine manufactured in? The head gasket seal problems only affected the earlier years.
A smart first step is to clean the engine thoroughly, and then try to isolate where the leaks are originating. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 12-28-2000).] |

I have cleaned the car to find out about
where it leaks and there are 2 major locations : (1) bottom of crankcase (where the 2 havles joined together ... (2) the top gasket (but I have replaced the gasket seals As to the degree of leaking, sometimes, the car smokes quite badly since the oil leak drops to the heat exchangers but other times, not much (which means quite randomly.) Thanks for the reply. |

I've forgotton to mention the year --
it is a 1990 tiptronic model so I think it might have that problem. But the way, I am having something like 1500 km (2 full tanks of petrol) for 1 litre of oil consumption, is that normal or high. Thanks again, Felix |

My '90 will sporadically weep around the right side chain cover. I have also heard of some that will leak around the oil oines that go to the cooler. Once the thermostat opens to allow oil up there, the leak occurs.
Cylinder head leaks should be easy enough to spot if you do give the engine a good cleaning. As said earlier, they all leak some amount. Good luck. Contrary to some of the scary posts about these cars, I would say they are pretty reliable and use mine as a daily driver with no problems. |
