msd 6 installation
 

another question regarding msd 6 installations!
I have a 79 911SC Euro and have a question on hooking up the wiring to these units. Does the purple and green wiring harness need to be attached to the MSD unit or do I use the white wire? I tried hooking up the white wire to the green wire in the connector via a spade clip and got nothing to fire. Do I need to hook up the green and purple wires? if so, what wires in the connector do they attach to? There is a green wire and a black wire going to the distributor but not sure which is which.
Also, does a spark plug gap of .055" sound about right? I have pistons with a CR of 9.3 and cams from a C2/C4. After my rebuild, I did not even get an inkling of combustion.....no start and flooded the bejesus out of it.

Yes the purple and green wires hook up to the green wire and the shielding around the green wire. The black wire you speak of may be the sheilding around the green wire, I'm not sure.

I don't know which way the wires go (purple to green or purple to black) but you can hook it up either way and see what you get. See my answer on the previous post about reversing these connections. If you end up with it wrong you just reverse them.

I use .040 on my spark plug gap. .055 seems excessive

You may need a tach adapter too but try it first as andy says. Yes, .040 is right.

The MSD manuals showed just about every installation permutation and they've worked for me so check them.

I checked my MSD with an oscilliscope, it was cool to see the multiple spikes...and sure enough it goes to 1 spark over around 4k..
