Oxygen sensor connector removal?

Can I remove this connector an wire direct? I purchased a generic Bosch oxygen sensor a while back that is supposed to splice into the wire that goes to this broken connector.

I would like to remove this and splice the new sensor in ahead of this connector.

At the moment everything is working fine even with the exposed wire.

Thanks

My connector looked just like that when I got my 84 Carrera.

Try to get the rubber boot/connector off of the plastic part that has broken loose. Be careful not to brake the wire.

I used JB weld to repair the plastic part (had to let it cure overnight).

Splice the new O2 sensor to the wires off of the old O2 sensor.

Hope this helps!

I replaced the connector, could never find an original.

I replaced mine with a used one from parts heaven, just soldered and heat shrink the connection. Just be careful cutting the wire from the connector as this is very short and difficult to strip.

I actually thought when I looked at your picture, that it was a picture I posted last month!

I ended up using some solderless connectors, but learned a few things...The wire that goes into this connector is sort of coax in nature, it has an inner wire and an outer shield. The inner wire goes to your O2 sensor and the outer shield dies in that plastic connector. Both the innner wire and the shield wind up back at your electronics box, inner to pin 2 and shield to pin 4 if I remember...

I came to grips with all this after I screwed up the wiring...but then it didn't matter because a PO had back dated my CIS to '77, before there was o2 sensors and control boxes...so my O2 sensor goes to nowhere...

To answer your question: Yes, you can splice ahead of the broken connector. However, it will be less convenient for the next repair.
