a couple of engine questions. valve adjust, and timing.

ok, two dumb questions. sorry.

what happens in a motor to cause valves to come out of adjustment? locknuts, solid metal pieces...what moves?

and why do RPMs change when you move the timing? isnt the "period" unchanged?

Cliff

Lots of things are happening to change valve clearance. Valve seat wear. Valve margin wear. Valve stem tip wear. Elephant's foot adjuster wear. Rocker pad wear. Camshaft wear. All adds up. To say nothing of not having the lead screw lock nut set correctly.

RPM changes when you change the timing because you are really changing the amount of advance. When you turn the distributor (I'm not going to even GO THERE with which direction because a certain car has a distributor that turns BACKWARDS compared to the rest of the 911 world, I don't want to say the name but it sounds like SUPER CARRERA) in the advance direction, the idle speeds up, which causes the flyweights to fly out further, resulting in more advance, until everything settles down and you start over.
