Have an idea which wires go to which terminals on the mirror switch?

Happy New Year Friends!

I spent the New Years Weekend replacing the plastic lining on the doors to try and contain the little heat I get! When I pulled off the driver side door panel, I must of pulled to hard because all of the wires pulled out of the mirror switch. When replacing it, I again looked at my trusty Haynes wiring diagram and it did confirm that I should have 6 wires with the appropriate colors--but it didn't say what posts on the switch the colors were suppose to go too! So I tried about every combination I could manage, even troubleshot with the multimeter. The best I can do is get the mirror to move up and down, but not left and right. In fact in many cases, the mirror moves up and down regardless in all of the 4 quadrants of the switch.

Anyone worked with this and know the color positions or is it possible my switch is bad?

The colors are white, brown (x2), green, blue, and black/violet.

Thanks,

Anthony,

Without looking at the switch and not having had one apart, I took a look at the wiring diagram and I think this is how it's supposed to work

If you look at the wiring diagram, you will see the motor coming off the switch. The motor is used to drive the mirror in both directions which means it should be energized when changed from one position to the other.

If the motor moves the mirror up and down, than I believe you have that part right. If you look at item N35 on the drawings (magnetic clutch for mirror control)I believe this engages when the mirror goes from side to side. This is probably a small selenoid valve that engages when power is applied which engages the horizontal gears. See if you get resistance across the white and brown. Brown will be the ground. If you apply voltage, you should hear a click.

Once you have determined that that is working, the switch should have continuity through it when you move it to the verticle position, and the same when you move it to the horizontal position.

In the horizontal position, two of the terminals should have continuity through them. In the verticle position, you should have continuity throuh two terminals.

When you push the swtich to the horizontal (left or right) the motor should turn clockwise and then counterclockwise depending on which way the switch is pushed.

When you move to the up and down position, the same thing should happen, but the magnetic clutch should engage, and the motor will cause the mirror to go up and down.

Like I said, I never have had one apart, but it makes sense looking at the wiring diagram.

Someone else may chime in who has actually taken a mirror apart to verify this.

Good luck

Steve

Thanks,I'll check for he magnetic clutch engaging, although I never heard a click! I also get continuity on 3 terminals moving the switch horizontally.

Anthony -- I've got a diagram sketched of exactly how the wires are connected, but it's at home. I'll post the information some time tonight.

Here's what I sketched out when I disconnected my mirror. Hope it helps
