Aren't we all "car" enthusiasts or are we ????? please read!!!

I am a former owner of corvettes, have owned 9 of them and have always wanted a 911 Porsche. I currently still own a corvette and a Porsche, however I am so thrilled with the way the Porsche rides, handles and drives that I am going to put my vette up for sale I just dont enjoy driving the vette anymore. As a current member of the local corvette club I have quite a few friends that I have made over the years. I am a car enthusiast have been all my life and I am not one to put down other makes and models for whatever reason. I am just really surprised at the response that I am getting from some of the members of the corvette club
In my opinion some people are close minded and ignorant. I think we all have something in common we are all car nuts and gearheads and sites like this are great for sharing information and getting advice. I was very active on the corvette forum another great site for information and advice...I am just disgusted with the ignorance and comments from closed minded people...sorry mew guy had to vent...lol

I'm sorry for the judgements and prejudice you apparently have seen. It's childish and its sad and I don't want those vibes in my life. Fortunately, this kind of excessive pride is quite easy for me to see when it happens, and I have a natural tendency to turn my back. Turn your back.

I love motoring, and I like using that term. The British approach was my first experience as my friend's dad had an XKE what we got our drivers' licenses. Road rally and stuff.

I like being prepared and knowing my car. Having the right tire pressure and parts in case of an emergency. Watching other motorists carefully and avoiding danger.

And cars. Oh how I just love cars. Any car. Mahy are beautiful to look at. Soem are stunning. Some use offbeat technologies. They all drive, which is the really magical thing about cars.

for me, it's not about going fast, or looking cool, or any other single goal or power trip.

I just love cars, and motoring. You're sure welcome here, David. No judgments.

I too have had several corvettes over the years. Can only say the 911 is not of this earth! There is no comparison, and if the corvette guys can get some seat time in a 911 they would convert too. Well, at least 90 percent of them. I thought it was just my own feelings about the 911, but honestly the first time I drove the car, within 2 miles, I knew there was a huge difference. Still smiling!

Yes, the Corvette bunch has their obsessive/compulsive, retentive types who tend to be focussed on the 'old' factory production line results out of the paint booth, specifically a certain orange peel pattern and drip patterns that are hard to duplicate in a shop! 'Originality' to them means a defective paint job ... and attempts to achieve a better paint job destroy the character of the car, so it seems!

rstoll I have wanted a 911 for the last 15 years but was always afraid of the maintenance cost that I have heard of and have backed out of buying a 911 more than once at the last minute but I finally took the plunge and found a nice 81SC the difference between a vette and a 911 is undescribeable the ride the handling the way it drives and I hate to say it but the quality of a german engineered car versus an american car. I have driven vettes that are 10+ years newer than my porsche and my porsche drives better, people just need to be more openminded I love my Porsche and when I go to replace it I will buy a later model 911.

Never had the opportunity of driving a Corvette nor know much about them. I did watch Derek Bell's son drive one and give the dominant Oreca Vipers a run for their money during a race once though!

Anyway, I really enjoy the 911S and it's unfortunate that others would make disparaging remarks about the marque.

My father owned a 993 C2s and a 996 and we both autocrossed the cars and did some DEs. Now he drives a C5 Vette and he is admitting is a step back. I personally dislike the Vette. Its too large and not communicative enough. There is something about feeling each pebble on the road when you are at the limits that cannot be duplicated in anything else I have driven (well, 1999 M Coupe Euro spec does come close). Another major difference is the people involved with the cars themselves. Just look at the responses and replies here versus "Vette world". I bet you will also see a drastic difference there. Just my two cents.

Sprint Karts came to mind on my first 911 drive. Response very much like a kart. Very direct. The vette seems very soft and unresponsive now.

I have always been a devout German car owner (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes)...however, even I can't argue with the fact that the Corvette Z06 is an incredible car--especially when you consider the $48,500 MSRP! Let's compare a new $48k Vette with a new $48k Porsche...

If you don’t believe me, go drive one. Sorry to say, Price for performance, you can't beat the Corvette Z06 for a new car—Not that I plan to buy one (I still am in love with the timeless Porsche lines)

Vettes and 911s cannot be compared. The closest thing Porsche ever made to a Vette is the 928. Both are big heavy V8 touring bruisers. The 911 is small, nimble, and less powerful. The 930 is powerful enough but still small. I can't really think of any American car that is appropriate to compare. The 911 is unique. Don't be too hard on your Vette buddies, you'll find a lot of narrow minds and *******s in Porsches as well. What I've got is always better than what you've got. Human nature.

I wonder what this boards reaction would have been had you said you were selling your 911 for a Vette...

I feel your pain !

I have had 3 other Porsches (356 B, 914 & 74 911 Targa) as well as Vettes, drag boats and all the toys.

In '97, I bought a 57 Chevy that was ratty , but original to hot rod with my son who was 12 . We pulled the engine and trans , built a 350 with a ton of HP from scratch with parts from Summit. I had a ball teaching my son how to do it all.

I would drive the car into work once a week and the shop would empty out to see my progress and drool on it. To them I was god because I could do all of this myself.

THEN I GOT THE 74 PORSCHE.

I BECAME AN INSTANT *********. Just because of the car ! It didn't matter that the car was a 74 and cost less than the 57 - it was just the perception of the Poooorsch.

Oh well, you live life to do the things YOU wnat to do. Not to impress others.

Automahn,

yeah, i'm a car enthusiast through and through. i've loved cars since i was old enough to ride in one (on way home from hospital )

you know, one of our local PCA friends is in the Ferrari club, the PCA, and the Corvette Club. he keeps saying that the Corvette Club was for people that like to SHOW their cars nd were afriad to drive them. i thought he was joking until i saw a corvette show at the local shopping mall. man, he was right. there were corvettes that were owned by people that lived not even a mile away from me, but i never even knew they had these cars at all. what is the point of owning a beautiful car if you don't drive it... unless it's some rare museum piece. the last time i checked, a 1984 corvette was not exactly a rarity.

the guy we got our 924 from was an avid Trans Am fan. he had 18 Trans Ams before owning his first Porsche (a 944). since then, he owned a half dozen Porsches, and he sold the 924 to us after just buying a new 911 turbo and he neded the garage space.. after all, he had to park the Lotus Esprit Turbo sideways just to squeeze the 911 turbo in. wow, i wish i had that "problem".

no matter the car, no matter the marque.. you will run into snobs. there are 911 drivers taht don't know that the Mustang guys make fun of them every time their back is turned. ther are Mustnag drivers that don't realize the Camaro drivers are making fun of them when their back is turned. then there's Mitsubishi drivers making fun of the Camaros, and Corvete drivers making fun of the Mitsubishis. what all these people need to do is just shill out and start having FUN with their car, rather than making fun of other people's cars.

we ran into a snotty lady from the Northern NJ region PCA that proceeded to insult US, our friends, and members of our region. she had a smogged and bogged bone stock mid 1970s red 911 with all the underbody rust, taxi scars and scrathed paint you could care to look for. our region, Northern NJ, and a few other regions got ready to take some laps of Watkins Glen. we were eager to see wht this most snotty of car owners had hiding under the hood. she then informed us that she didn't want to look dumb lapping the track. sorry lady, you already looked pretty dumb to everone by that time.

no matter the car, it never hurts to keep the true car enthuiast mindset. next time you see someone in a hot rod, a shiny classic, or another Porsche, take the time to wave, give the "thumbs up", or smile. making friends never hurt anybody. for all you know you may have just met the person that has a nice 968 Club Sport they are bored of and you may just be interested in

My neighbor has a C5 vette as well as one from the 80s and one from the early 70s. After a 930 took residence at my house, we struck up a conversation and to my surprise the vette lover said he had always wanted a Porsche. Go figure.

REMEMBER STEVE MCQUEEN?
I remember him bombing through Hollywood and the canyons in his old speedster. That was the "ultimate." All the rides he had on the pro circuit and all the cool P cars, yet, in his last years, his favorite thing was to tool up PCH from his home in Malibu to Trancas, in his 40 Ford 2 door, coupe I think. "...it can't be rationally explained or justified...."

Neither ignorant nor close-minded, they merely have a real identity crisis. You were moral support for their very identity, now they think you are deserting them. People just plain and simply have the tendency to identify with cars, music, social groups, and the like. To each of us our identity is important. In reality, that identity is more important than any car, ideology, profession or whatever. Be careful that you don't take on a new "identity," or you could wind up in the same boat.

I remember an article in Car & Driver a couple of years ago about "long" and "short" car lists-the "long" one was a list of any car (truck, boat, whatever) that you ever found interesting, cool, gorgeous, awesome (pick an adjectve)-and thus for me included almost all vehicles ever produced (well, except for an AMC Pacer-or maybe a Trabant.) The "short" list was the list of cars (or vehicles) that you actually planned (or at least hoped) to own and drive someday. My "short" list includes (but is not limited to): an early 911/912 (got one), a mid-60's Corvette Roadster (triple black, small block, sidepipes, knock-offs), 5.0 Mustang (had one-and I'll probably hunt it down and buy it back), '72 Chevelle SS (had one), Jeep Cherokee (got one), an MJ or CJ2 flatfender Jeep, BMW M5, a Kaiser M715 with a swapped-in Cummins diesel and an Allison 5-speed auto, an Mercedes E500, an early Ford Bronco with a swapped-in 5.0, an ex-DPS Crown Vic, an Impala SS (phantom) Wagon...etc.
Yeah, I'm a car guy.
To paraphrase a new credit card commercial-"What's on YOUR short list?"

rstoll,

What about an '83 928? That would give you the 1983 "trifecta." Just imagine these three cars sitting in your driveway or garage. "Hmmm...which one should I drive today?" That would be an excellent problem to have.
