Well thanx for all the comments was nice to "light up" a topic and it gave me somewhere to vent. Well I guess I am a Porsche guy now with no regrets whatsoever!! But the bottom line is that I'm a car guy and I always will be but I will remain an open minded car guy I love my 911 and if I was to replace it I would get a later model 911 but I wont turn my nose up to vettes,mustangs etc etc what you generally drive is personal preference different strokes for different folks. I was pretty dissappointed with some of the comments of close minded people, but oh well life goes on. I drive what I want to drive, I am not trying to impress anyone but myself I love my car and thats all that counts...wait until I show up at a "corvette funtion" in my 911...lol

It really is a strange phenomenon, brand loyalty. The Chevy guys don't like Fords, and vice verca. Taken to the extreme, I guess this is why you can't visit Bethleham for Christmas (Muslims vs Christians). A very stange and lethal quirk. I never really thought about it, but my 'vette buddy (the one I play chase with on the weekends) has never said the first bad word about my car. His C5 will eat my SC alive in any venue but looks (my opinion). I like corvettes so that has never been an issue. We both went to a Corvette club event last summer. It was very strange. All the owners just sat around and polished their aftermarket parts. Not one of them was interested in roadracing. Both of us went away dissapointed. Needless to say he didn't join. I guess showing the cars are what interests them. It really isn't just the 'vette owners though. I've talked with lots of "cool car" owners over the years and very few have the desire to race at a track. All that power just to cruize around? I must be missing something.

You need to remember that the Corvette list is a BIG list. Not everyone is putting you down...just the hot heads.
I gave very serious thought to buying a C5 'Vette, and although the acceleration and creature comforts are pretty impressive, I wasn't really too terribly impressed with the build quality. Being a professional cheap skate like I am, I like to examine every aspect of a car before considering owning one. Some of the C5 maintenance costs are unbelievable....$2000 for a set of run flats and not everyone can replace them, $1500 for a clutch (I suspect replacing that on an SC or Carerra will be cheaper), there are problems with dirt getting trapped in the side window rubber seals that results in severly scratched side windows, there's some type of problem with the alarm/keylock system that prevents the car from starting (and GM refuses to acknowledge it's a problem even though the peole on the 'Vette list were reporting it as a common failure), people are beginning to complain about the fit of some of the body parts, I've seen C5 'Vettes with the leather on the seats worn RAW at 30K miles, and who knows how reliable they'll be as time passes. After looking into buying a C5, I reached the conclusion that GM STILL doesn't get it. |
In my view, you can't have both. You either like Porsches or Corvettes. It's like you can't be both a Met fan and a Yankee fan. If you're a Porsche guy and you're thinking of how nice that new Vette is, you've lost the faith. Go over to the dark side; get it over with.

i had a Beautiful Black 68 Vett convert, it was the biggest piece of crap I ever had and I sunk over $6k in repairs in the 2 years I owned it
I attended a Vette club meeting here in Vegas and was suprised on a clear evening and over 60 enthusiests at the bar only 4or5 actually drove their car aside from myself, I am convinced most Vette owners are posers which is why the majority of Vettes sold are autos. The ultimate car for me F-50 Ferrari,it would be a garage queen though totally unrealistic to drive, a more practical and realistic car a late eighties Testarossa which has the great boxer engine design of the 911, I'll still keep my SC for daily transportation though Jeff 78SC |
Naw, the fastest, best handling, sexiest car in history is the 1983 Porsche 911 SC. I'm sure everyone will concede this point.

I read in Motor Trend, back in the day, that the 4-cam belt driven V8 used in the first Corvette ZR1's was supposedly a copy of the 928 engine, blueprints and rights purchased from Porsche. This may be false, but try tossing that out for your Corvette friends to chew on.

VW magazine from UK had a spread about a 67 Beetle turning ll.8 quarter mile times and 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. No nitrous, no turbo. Looks almost stock except for bigger rear tires. VW type 4, about 2.3 L I think. That would be a neat Q ship.
Obin: perhaps those of us close minded folk oughta listen to the possibilities of garnering similar performance out of that underdog of a 924. Is this sort of perfomance cheaply available to the DIY guy? I could open my mind real quick if that were the case. |

uhhh, i read this whole post again and i don't have a clue diverdan, either you have a typo or something. please explain. i only mentioned the 924 when talking about the guy that we bought it from. i didn't post a picture of one, nor did i post a link to one, nor did i talk about 924 handling in any of my posts.

Obin, I think he was referring to the close-mindedness of 911 owners towards the watercooled Porsches ("not a 'real' Porsche" etc.). The idea I think was to ask you if the 924 could be made to perform as impressively as said Bug, cheaply, and for the DIY guy.
