Antique
A friend of mine at work has a '55 Chevy. I noticed that he did not have an inspection sticker. He said that he had it registered as an antique. He said that he did not have to have it inspected because it was registered as a an antique. He said it cost him $65 for 5 years. Has anyone registered their Porsche as an antique? How old does it have to be to do this?

Well, I'm sure it varies quite a bit from state to state, but there is always a mileage limit per year.

In Virginia, the car has to be at least 25 years old to be considered an antique. I registered my 1970 911 as an antique and I believe it was around $45 for as long as I own the car! I also was able to purchase original 1970 VA license plates and registered those to the car for $11. Mileage is restricted to 2500 per year and your not supposed to drive further than 500 miles from your home. This goes nicely with the restrictions from the insurance company too.
In VA, antique vehicles are also exempt from state inspection and emissions too. -Dan |

Presuming you're talking Texas:
http://www.dot.state.tx.us/insdtdot/orgchart/vtr/reginfo/spplates/misc/antique.htm Antique Vehicle Issued for passenger cars, light trucks, or motorcycles that are at least 25 years old and collector's items. The vehicle must be used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, or other functions of public interest and in no case for regular transportation. Applications must be filed with then Vehicle Titles and Registration Division. The fee for the five-year period is: Vehicles manufactured in 1921 and subsequent years - $50.30; vehicles manufactured in 1920 and prior years - $40.30. My state (CT) has no emissions inspection on cars over 25 years old with or without "antique" plates. CT like TX has a picture of a dorky (IMHO) vehicle and was reason enough not to get it. We can however get "vanity" plates on any kind of plate so you might want tp check that out. Good Luck Ernie |
