Broken rear sway bar mounts on 1989 Carrera
I have a broken rear sway bar mount on the driver side and it appears that the left side has been repaired in the past. I just purchased the car and hear there is a upgraded mount that has to be welded on (must grind old mount off and weld new one on). Is the repair part that Performance Parts sells the correct part, does our host sell the part, and can a good TIG welder make this repair look professional?

Common problem on the Carreras. I think this thread is the second one in a week regarding torn out sway bar mounts. Pelican Parts sells the heavy duty sway bar mount. Go ahead and get one for each side. Easy to weld in.

Do it once, use the WEVO cast sway bar mount. The factory upgrade mount is still just stamped steel and will eventually break as well. The old ones need to be ground off and weld the new ones on.

+1 on the WEVOs. They are an excellent way to keep a common problem from coming back.

Just looked at their website, they do look like a quality upgrade, I guess you use your factory bracket to bolt to their mount?

Ditto on the Wevos. I installed the "improved" factory mounts, both sides, PLUS the Smart Racing reinforcements, and still tore one. Don't screw around with this more than once. Wevo is also equal to or cheaper than the factory part, especially if you add the Smart reinforcement.

The updated mounts are fine [ they are reinforced.] To say that because they are stamped steel they aren't any good is in my opinion incorrect. Porsche took what was essentially an L shape and boxed it with a gusset, making it very strong. Nothing wrong with the cast pieces, but I think your money could be better spent. Just my opinion.

The Wevo mount is almost the same price as the updated factory piece. No-brainer IMHO.

Ahhh....thank you! Mine are still original...I've gone to 29mm t-bars, so I don't know if that will take some of the stress off of the sway bar mounts. If/when they do break...WEVOs!

WEVO MOUNTS
MIG welding will be better than TIG for this job due to the dirty metal, galvanizing, gaps, etc. |
