How to find out what the engine size is
 

Does anyone out there know how to properly identify the size of an engine in a 911 (engine serial number, identification marks, etc??). I have a little bit of a unique situation as I bought a car from someone who was rebuilding it from the top down. The car is registered as a 1969 with DMV but has a 1976 body on it. I'm not sure if its a 2.0 or 2.2 engine. The engine is carburated with a Weber 6 pack.

Assuming the engine has not been built up from its original displacement, look at the engine type number and serial number.

The engine # is located to the right of the fan shroud on the casting and just beside it on the flat is the type. For 1969 the engine type should be 901/03 for a T or 901/09 for an E.

Webber carbed engine serial number shoud start with: 619xxxx

tony, what about on a CIS 74? i'm a bit confuse. i've had the car for 5 years now. all the numbers matched. but i'm not so sure about engine #. thanks.

There are many experts out there with ref books to check your VIN.

Engine numbers and VIN numbers don't "match" as in identical numbers. The only way you know what engine serial number came with the chassis number is to get a COA (certificate of authenticity) from Porsche.

For a 74 911 the VIN starts with 911 410 xxxx coupe or 911 411 for a targa
for a 74 911S; VIN 911 430 coupe/ 911 431 targa
for a 74 Carrera 911 440 coupe/ 911 441 targa

The base 911 engine had 150 hp. engine number/type 911/92 #614xxxx
911S; 911/93 #634xxxx had 175 hp
911 Carrera; 911/93 #634xxxx 175 hp

The COA will cost around a hundred bucks from PCNA. I think you can find the info on the PCNA website.

To avoid paying the $100+ COA cost, you can tell by the engine number what year it was made and what model it belonged in (T,E,S,RS,SC, etc). You can decode the numbers if you have a "red book" which is about $12 from this site. Post the numbers and I'll look them up for you.

If the engine number matches the year and model of the body, I'd say you have a 90% chance of the engine being the one that came in the car originally from the factory.

So I look at the fan shroud and casted on it is the following number 901 106 101 0R

This looks like the number from all the examples given but I still can figure this out. Does this clue help?

That is the casting/part number. Look at the base of the fan on the right. The engine number will be on a vertical piece, the engine type on the flat. The engine number is small and you might have to clean up any oil or dirt to find it. Keep looking. It IS there. ;)

that is the part number for the fan. The number you want is on the side of the fan. From rear of car, it should be on the lower right hand side of the fan. The number is only approx an inch in size and will be face out to the right side of the car. good luck finding it. Quote the number on this forum and someone will be able to feed you the details of the engine number.

6195715 is yor engine number. I'm unsure of what engine this is, however when i was preparing to buy my car. I just simply rang my state porsche centre, quoted them my numbers (VIN and engine) and they told me everything about the car, ie - what car my engine was originally from and where and when my car was delivered. Very useful information for very little effort. The guys at my local porsche centre are really helpful, and i'm sure the will be more willing to helping you.

619 denotes 2.0L T; rest is production number of the engine. Certainly it is a '69 engine.

However, the engine type you have posted 901/10 tells a different story. Engine type belongs to a 2.0L S!

Are you certain? Maybe the engine type could be 901/19, not 901/10 as this would correlate with the engine number you've given and matches up with the Webers you mentioned (although they could always have been retrofitted). BTW 901/19 is for USA Sporto model.

Strange combination of numbers. It looks like the 901/10 is for a 68 or 69 911S BUT the engine serial number is for the same year 911 T's.
perhaps a dyno run will tell more, the T had 110hp while the S had 170.
Either way, sounds interesting.

The "10" could be a 19. I'll have to take another closer look. I was so excited to even find the number I might have looked at it funny. In either case thanks to everyone that helped out on this so far!!

I just took a closer look at the number on the engine and it is not a "10" but a "16" so its a 901/16. What does this tell me??
