Can anyone tell me about the 83' 911 Targa
Well there is a 83' 911 Targa that i will buy once the engine is rebuilt. it has 112,000 miles and worked fine but my mechanic let a guy use it to deliver some parts and he shifted into the wrong gear or something and rocketed the engine. anyways its a 5 speed and is Gold with black leather. really neat looking car that could use some TLC once i get it. I was wondering if you guys can tell me everything about the car that you know. Is it a good year? what are some problems/advantages over other years. And as I said before it is a Targa..so is a Targa worth more or what. Well thanks.

Well it's the last year of the SC. It has the normally bullet proof 3.0 engine. The Targa can be easily converted to a cabriolet, my personal favorite....
If you have any way of working with the rebuilder, replace the head studs, do a valve job and look at the cams, the chains, cam followers and wheels and do the Carrera cam chain tensioners. I did the 964 cam upgrade on my 3.0 and it was sweet... '83 euro cabriolet with 204 hp...woo hoo! [This message has been edited by mikez (edited 01-03-2001).] |

I found some of this info on the web...is it correct? Its from the history of the porsche 911
.... however, the real new life started in here - the '83 Carrera was as exciting as the 911SC boring. Although now being the basic 911, Carrera's 231 hp 3.2 engine deserved the "Carrera" name - it could do 0-60 in 5.4 sec and top 150 mph ! Advanced Motronic management system accounted for the higher 10.3:1 compression ratio, hence higher efficiency. ------------------ 85.5 Porsche 944 |

I don't think the Carrera 3.2s were available in the US in 1983. If your VIN is WPOEAO91DS160001 to -1430, it's a 180 hp US Targa SC. If your VIN is WPOEBO91ES160001 to -2260, it's a US Carrera Targa, with 207 hp.
Your web resource might be referring to European models. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe |

Targas are the best. Many say not worth the most, but they are the best. And I'm not biased.

Yep, Targas are the best. Especially since I can't frickin' fit in an SC coupe with stock seats...(grr)

Coupes are best. Unless you like Targas, then Targas are best. The 3.2 Carreras are stronger, there's no doubt about that. but the '83 SC is a pretty nice car!
Make sure the engine is rebuilt properly, it should have new valve guides , seats and seals. Properly rebuilt and maintained, that engine will go 250k miles EASILY. ------------------ '83 SC |

Yes, the Targas are faster; proven fact ;>
Have a comp and leakdown performed and make sure the mech. tells you exactly where the hiss on the leakdown came from on EACH cylinder. jw '78SC Targa in Minerva Blue. Minerva was the Roman god of Wisdom. Figures... [This message has been edited by Jdub (edited 01-03-2001).] |

Targas are good because they bring you closer to nature. When it rains you get water inside the cabin from the leaky roof and when you're going fast you really do feel fast due to the additional wind noise...
OK sorry guys. Just felt like teasing you Targa nuts ![]() Anyway I have a euro 84 3.2 Carrera Coupe that was first registered 23rd december 1983. So in order to be sure what you're looking at check the chassis number. I don't think an SC is a "boring" car compared to the 3.2s. The 3.2s are just the next step in the long 911 evolution. |

The 911 SC is a great car considered by some to be the quintessential Porsche with Its aggressive Stance and flared fenders. The engine is widely considered to be bulletproof but alas not fool proof. In my estimation a great entree into the 911 fraternity for the family man with other considerations and/or less play money. THey need Pop off valves and carrera chain tensioner updates to avoid costly mishaps, and are fun as hell to drive. Taga or coupe depends on the individuals preference ie I like open air but I also know I will add a later model coupe to my tiny stable to get the best of both worlds ( or with a good market, the 993 glass top targa would be a great space saver
