front end align/steering wheel question
I just installed a 930s steering wheel on my 77 930. The wheel is just not quite pointing straight ahead. Can the wheel be adjusted without a front end alignment being performed. The original wheel I took off was pointing straight ahead.
Thanks for any help. Dennis. |
Dennis,
Last year, I replaced the OEM steering wheel on my '84 911 with a "930S" steering wheel. I love it...looks and feels great and is slightly smaller in diameter. I also noticed after mounting it, that it was slightly offcenter. I double checked the position of the new wheel on the steering shaft, but to no avail. It appeared that the splines on the 930S wheel were aligned differently than my OEM wheel. To make a long story short, I had the steering wheel straightened when I had my annual alignment. It's perfectly straight now. Regards, Bruce |
Jack Olsen has one of those wheels on his car. Jack did you have to realign your wheels too?

Mine was a little bit off when I did the swap. As anyone who's done this knows, choosing between neigboring splines can result in it not being right either way. Still, it wasn't off so much that you could tell with a casual glance. When I had the car aligned and balanced, we got it dead in the center.

My wheel is slightly off center after my last alignment. Can I just pull the wheel and realign it slightly or should I fight my anal tendencies and wait for the pros to do it. Is this easy for a weekend warrior?

The splines aren't fine enough to get it perfect by just re-indexing the steering wheel on the splines. It's usually either too far left or right with 1 tooth. An alignment is required. To the guy who had it aligned and came back off-center, take it back and make them do it again for free.

I replaced my wheel six months ago w/ the 930 and had the same problem, just a little off. So I tried it both ways, just a little off to the left and then just a little off to the right. One way was definitely better and that's the way it'll stay until allignment time. Don't even notice it now.
