Spring is here...
Well, in Kansas, for a while, anyhow. After nearly a month of sub-freezing temps, we are blessed with a week of 50 degree highs...
I have successfully navigated the car, a 1973 911 T (CIS) from the storage to the house for the first of many Spring projects. The car previously sat for a number of weeks at a time (driven maybe 30 minutes, sat for 1 month, repeat) 1. Remove the rear control arms (bent) and replace with 1974 911S (aluminum) arms. While they are out, I plan to send the axles somewhere (1st question: Where?) to be re-CV'ed, rebooted, and reassembled. New wheel bearings. Complete set of poly bushings are to be installed. Brakes inspected, pads replaced, brakes bled. Anything else I should do while I'm in there? 2. Replace all fuel lines. Is it necessary to do the lines from the Injection pump to the injectors? They look used, but unworn. Anyone know where I can get the injectors checked/serviced? Should I just buy new? Engine is running rich, real rich. 3. Replace the damned leaking valve cover seals. Any advice on how I can do this now, and not again until next year? It seems this may reoccur... 4. New oil when I bought it in September (400 mi. ago) so I plan to change it. Last oilchange receipt shows 1994 (2500 mi. ago) I plan to run Techron through it at the end of the next change, so I'll be changing the oil again soon. I may go with 500 mi. intervals and Techron for a while. If I am close to something, and you think I should check it out, please let me know. This is a new-to-me car, and I'd not like to screw it up. I think the newer valve covers are better and less likely to leak. Reuseable silicon gaskets are available.
CV joints are easy to deal with and you shoudl consider handling this yourself. they may just need repacking a re-booting. Replacement is even easier than that. REplace every bushing you can find, like the spring plate bushings. I am going to have my rearend apart soon, and I will include caliper rebuild in my procedures. This does not take long and is an important maintenance procedure I think. ------------------ '83 SC |
