Show me your twin plug coils

I am in the process of twin plugging and would like to know (see) the best place for that "second" coil. Also have to order the correct length of wire for the coil Many thanks in advance!!

The stock location is on the left side of the fan housing. Why not put the second on the right side. Prob. would not need any custom wire as it's nice and short to the dist.

rh side of the engine, engine is in a spyder replica though so there are a lot less places to mount them to.

Cory,
Is that spyder yours? I was at Thunder Ranch two weeks ago - LOVE THAT CAR! We have a black one. See you at Knotts if that's your car.
**sorry for wandering post guys**

Angela-

It actually belongs to my father, we just picked it up a week ago and it is stunning. The paint scheme and windshield were my ideas and I think they turned out great. I'm waiting for some clear weather to take some good pictures and post them here. He also has a 904 on order with TR. They are planning on taking it to Knotts, I'll try to make it out there.

Back on topic though - the twin plug distributor is from Supertec, and the coils are secured with machined aluminum brackets (not sure who makes them).

Hmmm, so the question is where to mount twin coils...

I have a couple of pics -- here is a bracket that somebody made in a very small prod. run (I forget who it was tho)...

There is also a twin bracket the factory used in the 964 IIRC. I'll look for an install pic of that.

Mine is just a flat Al plate mounted in the regular location on the fan housing. I should move it... It is so ugly that it's been criticized by Architects...

Two engine builders that I have been around Parky Nall and Dick Elverud both think that the coil should be as close to the dizzy as possable for a very short coil wire.

This probrobly isnt the best place to ask but i was wondering whats so great about twin plugging? Does the extra plug really make that much a difference in hp or does it remedy other problems associated with race engines?

Twin plug does not make any additional HP but it does allow for higher compression without detonation. The higher compression is where the higher HP comes from. With inconsistent fuel it is an insurance policy.

i see. But doesnt detonation happen before the spark gets a chance to spark? how would twin plugging do anything for that

I will be using a relatively aggressive piston dome design on my motor and want to ensure that I get a spark on both sides of the dome to evenly ignite all the fuel under those pressures. Plus it looks too cool

Now my next question. Is a coil just a coil? Can I use any old aftermarket coil? (i.e MSD) Thanks!

Mine are mounted similarily to Jeff's. Like him I have a crankfire ignition. My mechanic took a bunch of time determining the best place to mount them.

I saw some nice looking coil brackets at Tannerracing.com

They aren't for porsche so you may need to check the diameters to make sure they fit or shim them if too big. They make roll bar and firewall mounting brackets.
