Paint Brand for Paint Resto
Ok Guys..!
I need your input on the best paint Brand for my 1982/911 SC. I've been looking for the paint code number where it's supposed to be (pasager side trunk compartment) but nothing so far. I have ask some friends about , Du Pont, Reliance and PPG since the market down here is dominated by this brands. So share with me your RESTO Proyect and tell me about your choice of Paint Brand and system. Cordially Vic ![]() ![]() |

Probably not that many restrictions on paint sold in Puerto Rico. I'd use the DuPont Centari acylic enamel or, if you have a heated booth, the Centari 5000 urethane for a really tough finish. So tough, it's hard to color sand. I don't prefer 2 stage paints, but we can't buy either of the former in CA.

Vic, will this be a re-spray on OEM or a bare metal restoration?
Are you doing it yourself or having it done? Most painters I know like to stick with what they use regularly, so if you're going that route pick someone who uses top shelf products and the system you choose. I'm partial to PPG's Deltron DBC (two stage) and Concept DCC (single stage). I'll be using DBC on the body and DCC on the interior, trunk, engine bay and underside of my "little" project. DCC is urethane and very tough. It is so glossy that many of the formulas need to be toned down with flattening agent to match factory finishes. BTW, my wife is nuts about PR -Ernie

This pre- paint Job I'll do my self. When I say pre-paint I refer to what should be a job well done, to the bare metal since the previous touch up's have been done by people that are not very profetional or the previous owner did not care much for the car. I have disasemble the car with my wife, washing ,de-greasing and cataloging every part . We have sand blasted every minor part, metal prep, prime and re-painted, bake in oven ,baged and boxed w/ part # all the black mounting brackets of course . We plan to do the same with the rest. One of the reasons doing that is because the previous touch up has chemicaly reacted and the paint look's like a Crocodile in the Hood , Deck Lid, and the pasager side. The driver side was repared very nice , "no Bondo" metal gas lamp and lead like the Old Days the way it was done before the plastic Bondo era. One bad thing is that the primer used in this particular fender did't work properly and some of the paint peel off. In regards to the color and Brand so far I prefer a catalized two part. DuPont I got a new paint Catalog from PORSCHE 2004 to 2006 and the paint is more a Slate Grey Metallic than a Darc Olive Green. I have discovered some parts that still have some of the original paint under some bumper protecting moulding rubber and have compared it and it is more a Gray not a Green . The Original finish is very nice and Glosy so I see no reason to tone it down. I don't want to over doo it anyway so I'll check before buyng. There is a Charcoal Gray (Lexus) and (BMW) that look's like it. In regars to your wife's madness about PR..., Thanks..! we need that for tourisim. I realy hope that one day we become a State , since we are only a territory of the US and have no adecuate Congress Representation(Senator or Representative) just and elected Resident Commisioner with no VOTE. Funny TAXATION and no Representation. Well we leave that for a while now. Check out this PIX . Is kind of Dark Down here so I'll take some photos Tomorow ![]() ![]() ![]() If you have more info in regards to the Paint let me know Cordially Vic ![]() ![]() |

For all that work why not go OEM Glasurit? It's great stuff, I sprayed a concurs winning 951 Black using the correct year Glasurit, and the finish was nothing short of amazing. I don't think i could have touched it with a PPG product.

Your Car looks like it is the same color as mine. My paint code is 708 which is named Metallic Black. It looks like charcoal grey with a bit of a green hue. This is what the color plate looks like.

Standox and Glasurit are water based paints and I'm not inclined to re-paint the car with this systems.
New cars are using this reformulated water based paints but down here with the constant Sun UV and Salinity I defenitly want something hars and tough. I dont think POSCHE used a waterbased paint back in 81 BALLETA where can I get Glasurit down here?,just to take a look at it . RossR what year is your 911? As promised here is a new daylight Pix of the Paint ![]() ![]() Cordially Vic ![]() |
