intermittant speedometer

i have an 87 cab with a speedometer that doesn't work for the first 5 minutes when the car is cold(below freezing). the speedometer , odometer, cruise control and shift indicator wont work when the car has been sitting in the cold. After about 5 minutes the thing springs into action and works fine until the next cold spell. I checked the connections at the speedometer and they appear fine. What other connections are there and where are they? Is this something else like a sending unit? Please help solve this with me.. thanks

Can't say for sure, but it's pretty easy to check out. I had a light bulb bouncing around in mine that was causing problems (shorting, I assume), but I got it out of there. Different symptoms though(like my speedo worked sporadically all the time).
Pull her out and check the connections.
Anyone else care to add? Not sure how fully electronic speedo works....

There is a magetic sensor mounted on the side of the transaxle, near the ring gear to create pulses to drive the speedometer. It has a two-wire connector you can check for looseness or a bad connection.

I had the same problem on my 1988 Targa last winter. I could never figure it out so I just replaced the sender. No problem now.
