Illinois Mirror Law

Looks like I'm leaving off the side view mirrors with my new repaint.

(625 ILCS 5/12‑502) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑502)
Sec. 12‑502. Mirrors. Every motor vehicle, operated singly or when towing another vehicle, shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.
(Source: P.A. 82‑122.)

That's really surprising, Phil. I wonder if there's a separate law that requires an outside mirror. Think I'll let you be the cop bait on this one.

I can't imagine driving a car without side mirrors, I mean at some point you have to say, Hey it's not illegal, but it is stupid. I mean why remove a useful safety feature? Just to safe a little weight or obtain a 'look'? You might as well remove your seatbelts.

Since the statute does not specify an exterior side mirror, it's arguable that a center rear-view meets the requirement, as long as it provides an unobstructed 200' view to the rear.

That being said, I can't imagine side mirrors would detract from the look of your new paint job. Maybe ask a trooper to explain if that is something they look for.
