Hi guys when welding flares what do you use to "back up" the line where you are welding? Unless the cut is exact there will be some small gaps what do you use for that? I have heard you use a copper spoon? I assume this is a welders/metal workers tool? I have to fill/bridge the gap of aprox. 1/16 to 1/8 in various spots and I am useing my mig welder with shielding gas. Is there someting a DIYer can use in place of this copper spoon? I cut and tacked in place my 1st of 4 GT flares on my 914 project car today and I will do a better job cutting the remaining 3 but you know how it goes. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A copper backup is useful when you burn through, or have a gap to make up,,
DO NOT buy the $27 eastwood "welders helper" Im sure most of us have a few scraps of copper pipe around the homestead...shape the pipe to fit with a BFH and weld away

No special tool needed, any copper will do. Actually, you should be able to fill 1/16th easily; an eighth with a little more skill w/o any backing. Turn your feed speed down and hold the tip as close as possible, even to the extent that you can't see what you're doing. Stick out and wire speed are the keys to low heat welding that will fill up the root.

I made mine by cutting in half a piece of copper pipe, flatten it out, drilled a hole in it, attached it to a old paint brush handle. You dont really need a handle on it, if the piece is long enough.
