Oil leak problem

I'm wanting to find out what is causing the leak of oil from my car, and if it is serious or not. The very slow leak, (but a leak nonetheless) is coming from the middle just forward of the engine area. I am thinking it might be from the transmission, but not sure as I'm not great at mechanical stuff. Someone once mentioned that it might be from where the case (tranny or crank-not sure), meets up, and Porsches sometimes have a leak in that area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

The leak is most likely caused by a failing rear main seal. Need to separate the tranny from engine to fix. It's common for an older 911.

EDIT: Page 34 of Wayne's 101 projects book talks about the seal replacement.

If it is a transmission leak, you can tell by the smell of the oil leaking. Tranny oil, if it is conventional, has a distinctive sulphur like smell.
