Suspension pan hole-need advice!!

Hey all-

The suspension pan has rotted through from the battery deck. The hole is about 7" x 7", but the real issue is that the driver side suspension bolts (both of them) are only about 3 " away from the hole, and there is severe metal fatigue there anyway. I would prefer not to wind up driving on one wheel coming out of a corner....

Am I looking at a patch job or a new pan? I don't weld, but do have access to a section of a full suspension pan that can be cut out and placed. Am I better off buying the correct piece from our sponsor and having that put in? I can't get a pic of the rusted bits from the bottom without the car being up in the air, and did not have my camera when I had it on a rack a couple of days ago.

All help appreciated. I don't want to drive until this is fixed.

Regards,

Bill

I'd rather work with new metal than clean up an old piece. These parts don't cost a lot of money to begin with. It's almost not worth the time to cut out a piece from a donor and clean it.

You can do a partial repair, depends on the damage. Most remove the gas tank support first anyway. Then you can easily see how much you want to cut out.

Like Milt said, you are better working with new metal. Just don't pop rivet it and/or fiberglass the patch. Have it welded in place after you have exposed enough good non rusted amterial to weld to.

If it were me, and I have been faced with this, I would do a full suspension pan. Because there is about a 99% chance there is more rust lurking.
