Update on my 911E purchase - pics
Here is the Sporto that I went to see. I made an offer to the fella £5500.
And here are the pictures - My 911 Sporto The pictures are a bit dark, and there wasn't much space to get a good shot of the whole car but they're not bad. Have some more of possible corrosion areas - just to show no corrosion. Whaddya think? It really is in good condition, no rust that I can see - lovely colour, and a nice 2.4 MFI in the back. Anyway, the guy said he had an offer from a Belgian dealer for £6500 but he wanted it to stay in the country so if I gave him £6k I could have it! So, pleased to get this bargain I will be going to get it next weekend. Can't wait to be driving this beauty. ---------- See the previous thread: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/004721.html [This message has been edited by layzee (edited 01-05-2001).] [This message has been edited by layzee (edited 01-05-2001).] |

Layzee,
Looks really nice! £5,500 would be a good price indeed. Does seem OK engine wise etc? If you're around the North West of England pop round in it! Good Luck, Anthony ------------------ '75 911S Targa http://member.aol.com/asaffery/my911s.html |

Saffs,
I go to University in Lancaster - but the car is staying here in Harpenden. The car is in Tyne + Wear tho so quite a trek to get it. BTW, I am paying £6000 - still and amazing deal I reckon. It used to belong to the Rothschild family! Engine looks good to me, batteries were flat when I went to see it. I know its a risk agreeing to buy it without seeing it run, but I didn't want to miss it at this price, and I know the guy uses it - has current Tax and MOT. $9,000 for a 72 with 68,000 original miles is a pretty good deal, although buying it without hearing the engine run or seeing if the Sporto shifts does carry some risks with it. You have to wonder why the seller wouldn't get it up and running before advertising it for sale.
Keep us posted on it, though, Layzee. A new 911 is always filled with good (and not-so-good) surprises. It's all part of the package. When there's no pre-purchase inspection, the news -- good or bad -- tends to be more dramatic. I hope in your case that it's all good. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 01-05-2001).] |

Highly recommend a pre purchase inspection to avoid any nasty suprises. Looks great, but isn't the steering wheel on the wrong side for you chaps
![]() Take care that no one attempts to fuel your vehicle through the oil filler on the rear passenger side fender!!!!!!! Best of luck with that beauty. ------------------ Bob 1982 911SC Targa [This message has been edited by ras911 (edited 01-05-2001).] |

Ahh Preston - the jewel of the North. That lime green on your porka sure makes it easy to see in the snow
![]() When we go and get it, I'm gonna ask to hear and see it running before we take it. Basically he hadn't got it out because it was in a barn with lots of other stuff and was hard to get out - and it was snowing quite heavily. [This message has been edited by layzee (edited 01-06-2001).] |

Layzee -
I personally like the idea of the Sporto, even though you'll pay a premium for parts for the tranny. It's cool. What a great looking car! I really like the extra running lights on the early 911s. CJ Campbell has a similar car with those lights. You should register at the Porsche Owners Gallery and post those pics...more please! ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 The Porsche Owners Gallery |

Layzee, looks like a good find from the photos - hope the engine/sporto transmission works out ok.
I see it has a PCGB sticker in the centre of the windscreen - it might be worth giving Richard Cole a call on 01737 642728 to see if he can tell you anything about the car. (He's the Archivist for the 2.0/2.2/2.4 Register). Good luck! Andy Boyle '69 911E [This message has been edited by andyjboy (edited 01-06-2001).] |

Ah, the old "found the Porsche in the barn story". I love it! Mine was in a garage with golf clubs, tricycles, a kiddy pool and an assortment of other junk piled on top of it. It took the PO an hour just to dig it out. Love at first sight.

Nice looking car!
I love that colour. Very cool. As Jack says, you do have to wonder why it isnt up and running? Before you buy it take it for a long drive. At least half an hour on different kinds of roads. But at £6k its a very good price. However I would still get a full inspection done. It'll cost you about £150 and thats cheap for a whole lot of piece of mind. If you are not mechanically incined the worst case senario is that you end with another £6Ks worth of Garage bills. Good luck and enjoy. Alex. P.S Are you SURE you want a sporto? ------------------ 911 2.7S Targa email:alex@cascade.f9.co.uk |

Yes, I am sure I want *this* sporto
![]() I don't see why not - the system seems to be well engineered and reliable; without a performance hit. It also has something to do with the low price. I am quite convinced it runs fine - the owner wanted me to drive it 300 miles home from his place. I intend to do the work on it with my dad - we are mechanically inclined. Got some more pictures - you can see the rear oil filler on the last one: More pics Quote:

Looks great - keep it forever. I'd like to find a 69-73 sportomatic for my wife.
Tip - take some of those keys off of your key ring - the weight will break your ignition switch. Regards, Allan - 70-911E |

Layzee,
No, actually, I'm BLINDED BY THE LIGHT reflected from all of that 'chrome' ... but it does look great and the mileage sounds extroidinarily low! Enjoy the MFI 'music' ... they don't make 'em like that any more! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Layzee, it's looking better & better!
Not only that but that registration number looks VERY FAMILIAR - what's the name of the guy you're buying it from ? I'm sure I've got a picture of the car somewhere although I may be mistaken (!) ![]() As soon as I saw the number I felt sure I'd seen that combination of colour (Aubergine) with a 'K' registration plate - I'll start searching! Incidentally where did you see the car advertised? ![]() Andy '69 911E [This message has been edited by andyjboy (edited 01-07-2001).] [This message has been edited by andyjboy (edited 01-07-2001).] |
