Real close to you would be Gary at Factory Werks in Huntington Beach. I have known Gary since he first opened in 1990 and trusted him to work on many of my 911's and 930's over the years. Honest shop and fair prices.

Not happy with Factory Werks. That one of a list of places that I won't let touch my car.

Had the main pinion bearing spin in my G50. (As far as I know no one has ever heard of this happening so it was some sort of freak problem.) I pulled the tranny myself and delivered it in my truck. A week goes by, "How we doing?" Hadn't started it yet. Second week; ditto. This goes on until about 5 weeks where he farms it out and finally I get it back.

I put a few hundred miles on it just fine. Then I go on a road trip with a couple friends with a Ducati and a CBR900. We had up to Sequoia and then to South Lake Tahoe. (Hiway 4 is the most insane bunch of twisties I have ever seen)

On the way back south the shifting gets weirder and weirder. Kind of random notchy. Literally at the south exit gate of Sequoia it sticks in neutral. Coast down the hill a bit and find a little ditch that I can coast up on so I can get under the car. Linkage is ok. It is inside the transmission.

Call AAA and where do I want it towed? Jeeze. No clue about anything local so hell, lets take it home. 239 miles flatbedded with Elwin the tow truck driver. But hey! The first 7 miles were free so it was only $580!

The problem was just that the transmission hadn't been correctly cleaned. This isn't an honest mistake. You pay to have the center mainplate that carries the bearing replaced, all of the bearings replaced, and all of the syncros replaced and they don't get the thing clean? Oh and while I was in the shop I had to listen to Gary b!tch about how the new Porsches are stealing bread out of his mouth because the hydraulic lifters don't require constant adjustment.

Ok, who WOULD I take it to?

- Scott's Independent in Anaheim. Very good, very conscientious, very open, friendly and honest. Real hooked up with the R Gruppe guys.
- Haus of Performance in Costa Mesa. Smaller shop with a real honest hardworking owner. He is well known in the Orange Coast Region of the PCA and hasn't left a bad taste in anyone's mouth.
- Hergesheimer MotorSports in Lake Forest would be my choice for south county or later cars like 996s or 993s. Yesterday he showed up at our Auto-X with his Porsche diagnostic computer and was checking cars and resetting codes for the fun of it.
- Pristine Porsche in Huntington Beach does good body work, Good repair work focused more on the earlier cars and has a small number of cars for sale.

Jimmy Deering of Mobile Works East. He is on the board, and comes to your house. He is currently living in Sacramento, but comes down a week at a time from month to month.
