gear oil under rear seat.

I grew up restoring mid 50s American cars and couldn't resist the temptation of an 81 911sc. I've driven the car about 5000miles last Summer and noticed several ounces of gear oil under the carpet on the rear floor boards. I'm not sure if the previous owner spilled some oil there or it's coming from somewhere else. The shift linkage cover is in place but doesn't have a great seal and I'm wondering if it's coming from the shifter rod seal???
The other strange occurance is after driving the car about 500 miles on a trip , I parked the car and the next day there was a large pool of oil under the engine(about 3 feet in diameter and looked like motor oil). The car normally leaks a little oil after daily use but nothing like this.
The car has been parked for the Winter and I haven't gotten a chance to look into it further. I plan on driving the car soon and can look at it more closely.
For you seasoned 911 buffs there must be easy answers that would take me days of scratching my head. Cheers for your help...

Well, I suspect the gear oil is coming from the shift rod seal ... I assume you have already found this article:

As far as the engine oil leak goes, I suggest spending a few $$$ at the manual wand wash, then take it for a spirited drive. Whenyou put it away ... put some fresh cardboard box material underneath. Examine for fresh leaks the next day, and post pics of your results!

I suspect you are right about the shift rod seal.
The strange thing with the engine oil leak is that it has only done this once after an all day drive and is normally a drip. I will take your advice and pinpoint the leak site, or most likely leak sites!! I will get back in a few weeks when I get a chance to drive the car.
