Photos of my 1967 911 and Very Belated Hello

I always planned on doing this after fixing her up a bit to make her more presentable. I'm embarrassed to say she's sat in my garage untouched for over 3 years. I pushed her out this weekend, cleaned her up a bit, unstuck the brake caliper pistons, and snapped some photos.

She's a bit of a mis-mash of parts and far from original, but seems to have been largely spared from the rust gremlins that plague early cars. A bunch of parts from a 1976 were added to her by others including: interior and gauges, 2.7 liter engine w/ Webers, doors, rear reflector/bumper, and Fuch alloys. I jokingly refer to her as my dyslexic 911. I have some period correct parts including the front bumper, front and rear seats, door panels, and green gauges.

She's been a Southern California car for quite a while. It has an old Balboa Bay Club sticker on the windshield and was stolen in Long Beach in 1994 (Milt's ghetto by the sea in his Avatar is quite appropriate). My guess is the '76 parts were added after the theft recovery. She's been ridden hard and put up wet, but still has potential.

This was an impulse buy made on emotion and not objectivity backed by knowledge. I discovered this great forum AFTER the purchase… I've always loved the styling of the SWB 911s and wanted to rescue and restore it to her former glory. My plan was to rebuild the 2.7 per Wayne's suggestions in his rebuild book, add some fiberglass bumpers and go for an R-inspired look. Sadly, as Dirty Harry said "A man has got to know his limitations", I’ve finally realized I'm not the man for the job. An ad has been placed in the classifieds section (hooligan helpers not included).

My childhood dream was to own a 911 so I can check that box off, but what I really want to do is DRIVE a 911. Lesson learned, I'm buying one that runs next time!

I read a thread where Jack said if he ever got rid of BBII he'd probably get a 1967 911 with steel wheels. Jack – I'd be happy to help you out there, it's even the right color, and I'll spring for the chrome rims!

That doesn't "look" all that bad. Of course I have yet to read your ad. The interior looks well done, and comfortable.

That looks way more 'presentable' than some of the rustbucket 'vintage classics' you see for sale on ebay all the time.

Nice Ghia in the background, looks to be a '67 as well. Am I sensing a trend?

Have fun!

Bob,

Welcome, SWB brother! What is your car number, should start with a "3." We keep a list of all the short wheelbase cars and their chassis, engine and gearbox numbers so you we can make educated guesses about what's original.

The restoration and enjoyment of a '64-'68 911 requires knowledge, time and money, in that order. To do it correctly requires a tremendous amount of all three. The first of those, the knowledge part, is nearly free, can be found in tremendous amounts on this BBS, provided that you ask the right questions of the right people.

Speaking of questions, I have a couple. What was your goal for this car when you bought it? Daily driver? Weekend fun? Driver's ed or autocross? Winning the local PCA concours? How you answer the question determines in large part the suggestions and ideas that the group will volunteer. Unlike a certain other BBS where as soon as you show up, people start picking your car apart and making you feel bad, Pelicans tend to be a friendly sort who will generously offer their help but not spontaneously offer criticism.

An old hangar mate of mine had a '68 911S that had a very similar appearance to yours-- his interior and doors were sourced from a mid-70's era car. This was (and still is) a common thing to do although most experts would advise against it given the value placed on originality these days.

Thanks for introducing yourself, let us know if you have more questions!

Thanks all for the comments. The car probably shows better in the pics than she is.

John - VIN is 306606 and gearbox is 130862. It's a 901 5 speed and I think its original. The intentions for the car were for a weekend toy set up more for DEs and the track. I never intended to put it completely back to stock or anything close to concours condition. Luckily, our daily commute is walking downstairs....

defcon65 - the ghia is actually a '64 (really hard to tell on those as they changed so little over the years). My father-in-law was the original owner. The old 40 hp has been rebuilt a few times, but its all orginal and runs like a sewing machine.

}{arlequin - yeah no kidding. I'm going to try and fire her up this week and see if I can get it running. The brakes were in better shape than I thought, but the front struts are shot. It also needs a new suspension pan.

Here's a few more pics.

Bob,

Looks great, so far! Why stop, now? As the person who 'named' BB1 ... I have to say you have definitely got a great start on BB 00!

The interior looks great ... for a late '70s model!

Personally, I would have to get rid of those seats, but that is just my take on an early model!

Glad the brakes were easy ... who knows, maybe the engine could be easy, too?

The interior does not look like a 67, looks nice
