best air intake/exhaust mods??
Hello Pelicans,
I just bought my first 911. 1985 3.2 Carrera completely stock. I have decided that I would like to have an "air intake" and "exhaust" solution. I am already decided to buy a Steve Wong chip after reading about many of your great experiences. I am already getting to the point in my budget where ramon noodles and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are going to replace eating all my meals out for a while. How can I get more air flow and better exhaust on a budget? What would $500 get me? Am I better off staying stock until I can afford some of the better stuff? Anybody know of someone with a used but good system can PM me. I have learned so much from you all. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. |

Neither of those is going to give you a huge power increase. Your money would be better spent on fixing the brakes, suspension, tires (if needed). Your car as it is can probably out perform your driving skills (no insult intended as mine can out perform me). An upgrade on your suspension will put a smile on your face alot more in the twisties than a few extra horsepower will.
Oh and forget about intake upgrades, the 3.2 engine doesn't have a breathing problem on the intake side. You can drill out the air box, but all that will give you is some cool noises.

Thanks Kurt,
Your are right about the tires and brakes. I had them done first plus an alignment. The car feels totally different and I have the WOW factor that a 911 should have. My 924s had a cat bypass, BB stainless and a chip which made the car feel very responsive. I can't help thinking that similar mods would help my car feel more like a sprinter than a runner. The posts to the Steve Wong chip thread made me envious of more low/mid torque and more response to my lead foot. If I do the chip, I am going to want to do exhaust too.

No doubt the chip and exhaust bypass with give you a few more horsepower. If it was me I would be upgrading your 20 year old suspension with new rubber bits and new shocks. I would also invest in new spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. The improvements will amaze you. Then you can put your money in a new chip and bypass. My suggestions are not sexy, but they will produce results. Be patient, before you know it you will have that extra $10K in your car. Remember I told you every 911 is a $20K car?

Cat bypass is a must a nice flow throug muffler (please for godsake do be stupid and pay ****** amounts of money on a freaking muffler) just ask Jack Olsen what he uses. Lots of **** here spend mega huge dollars for BS mufflers....
Ah sorry and a chip preferably a Steve Wong chip. Since most people dont race their cars on any *** track up grading those parts and pieces wont do damn thing for you from stop light to stop light. Where your wanting to feel more power and better drivability that the chip and exhaust will give you....... Power on! Yes then get your car sorted with brakes etc. Lots of wankers here Last edited by Bill Verburg; 03-20-2007 at 02:39 PM.. |
