Might de-update the impact bumpers on that '72 while you're at it.

I've done this conversion on a '69 Karmann Ghia which used a very similar transmission called "AutoStick". If this car already has the clutch cable guide tube in the tunnel, the job is pretty straightforward.....just swap out all the necessary parts. If the guide tube is not in the chassis, the job is a bit more involved. You'll have to install a tube yourself which will require opening up access holes in the tunnel in at least 2 places to do the welding. I had to do this on the Ghia and used 1/2" ID stainless tubing for mine . If your car has the tube, you should be able to see about 1" of it protruding from the bulkhead just forward and to the left of the transmission. Along with the new transmission, you'll need a new pedal cluster, clutch cable, shift lever, shift rod, bowden tube, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc & t.o bearing. You can probably get most of these items used from a Porsche recycler.

Why change it out? Drive it as is for awhile and see if you like it. Many people do. You already have a 5 spd in your 73? Best of both worlds.
