911SC inside leaks with rain

911SC knowledge base,

My 1980 SC leaks very bad when sitting outside in the rain, this spring I would like to fix the leaks,
Can you please let mw know the most likely causes of the leaks? Where to check, where to look, what to be replaced etc... I have purchased new rugs and want to make sure there are no leaks before I install the rugs.
Thanks in advice,
Gscock.

what part of the car are you getting water in? Have you ever had the windshield replaced?

Top/Bottom corners of wind shield and bottom corners of rear window. Seals shrink over time and they are not that big (overlap on frame is not very much) to start with. I used to get lots of leaks in my rear window bottom corners till I replaced the seal and used some plumbers putty in the corners to ensure a better fit.

Do not use non-Porsche brands... I still have one off brand I bought for 1/3 of the price on the shelf that just did not fit right...

Next thing is to make sure that the drain pipes in the roof are clean and clear. if they are blocked you will get some leakage into the cabin as well.

Last would be the Sunroof seals...

Never had a leak in the door or side window seals...

Enjoy!

Michael

I too had leaks and found it coming through the front windshield bottom corners. Replaced windshield with new rubber seal. No leaks.

Rather than guess, I would remove as much carpet and interior trim as possible. Get inside with a flashlight and have someone run low pressure water on the car. Don't quit if you quickly find a leak, there may be more than one.

Sunroof drain tubes often clog causing standing water (in the tube) to leak.

My car had a bad leak which was discovered shortly after I bought it when I parked it outside in the rain for several days. Came home from a trip and found about an inch and a half of standing water in the floorboards. Turns out the previous owner had the rear side-windows removed at one time (to replace the headliner?) Anyway, it took awhile but we finally removed and reinstalled the seals and the leak stopped.
BTW: the motronic brain under the driver's seat was almost submerged, but worked fine after taking it out and drying for a few days on a workbench. Whew!
