Brake Pads, Front

Just changed the front brake pads......and the braking feels soft when I start the car up.....when I turn the key, with the car off, the brakes feel a bit more stiff....

is this normal...I checked for leaks, found none, I checked the level in the master cyliner....fine....

help

Did a portion of the rubber boot around the caliper piston get wedged between the piston and pad? Also, if you didn't turn/replace the rotors, they won't feel right until the pads wear to the shape of the worn rotors.
