new '99 996 owner here

Hi everyone,

Pending a mechanic's once-over, I'm the owner of a '99 Carrera with ~50K miles on the clock.

He pointed me here - good info on the main seal problem with early '99s, and that's something he'll be checking.

Anything else I should look for or ask him about? The test drive was through some nice, curvy roads. That plus a decent price + 1yr warranty sold me.

Thanks!

Kevin

Good to have you here. It sounds like many of us tried and true air-cooled guys are seriously thinking about getting water cooled models, myself included.

There's a decent 996 forum here and also over on Rennlist.

Thumbs up

I am selling my 99, begrudgingly, because of my RSR restoration. I have thouroghly enjoyed it and will miss it. I have never had a problem, despite all the rumors these 996's are incredible!

Congratulations

Kevin, you are on the right site, but in the wrong sub-forum - try the 996/997 forum...

As for early 996s, yeah, RMS mostly. Bear in mind however that they are not the end of the world (quite easy to fix and cheaper than say, collapsed tensioners). Also keep in mind that worst case, a new crate motor can be installed for $10K using an independant mechanic.

They are fast fast cars....

I don't know! Barring an ugly mechanical discovery, I'll take it tomorrow or Friday.

Don't know if it has LSD -since it wasn't mentioned I doubt it. But seller is an auto dealer selling a trade-in from second owner, so it's possible it's got it and they weren't aware.

Was it an expensive option? How can I tell once I've got it (other than spinning the tires and looking at the marks!)?

I just drove a '99 996 for the first time about a week ago and was impressed with the vehicle's performance and handling. As I have not driven any other Porsches besides my '74 911, I was curious and the car was incredibly fun to drive! Have a gret time with the car, you're at the right place!

Under the hood there is a sticker that lists all the option codes on the car when it was built. There are various decoders online that can be found with google...
