ROW VIN tag on dash not A pillar?? Help needed

I have an 85 ROW Carrera. Registering the car in Arizona and it passed inspection in all regards except they are questioning the location of my metal VIN tag which is on the dash driver's side rather than on the A pillar.

My understanding is that all US spec cars have the VIN tag on the A pillar but ROW cars could have them in either location.

All the other vin numbers on my car match (gas tank, under hood).

What gives? What do I do....get a police inspection?

You've answered your own question. US cars were required to have a VIN plate on the A pillar, ROW cars weren't. So yours doesn't have one.

I suppose you could have one made and glue it on. I really don't know why anybody would care about it.

I have seen ROW cars that have been 'federalized' with the VIN tag glued or rivited onto the dash top like you are describing. It was probably done that way by whoever federlized it. I'm suprised the DMV even cares...it has a visible VIN tag on it that matches all of the other numbers. I guess you could take it to the Arizona police/highway patrol and see what they say? Maybe they will ok it? If they require one be added to the A Pillar be careful that they don't do too bad a hack job of installing it. I have a friend with a car that the CHP people did a crappy VIN install on...it is crooked and one of the rivets didn't fully seat or snap off correctly...looks pretty bad.

Good luck, let us know what you do.

Cheers, Cooper

svb,

Sorry to hear you are having a hassle. You may have better luck with the police dept. When I was registering my ROW 78 SC (with VIN tag on A-pillar) in Michigan, the state DMV computer kept rejecting the application because of the "3" digit that identifies the car as a ROW. Apparently their system doesn't even acknowledge that ROW cars exist.

The fix was to get a policeman to "verify" the VIN, which apparently can override the automated system. The funny part is that the verification process consisted of the policeman standing outside my car in my driveway while I stuck my head in the trunk and read the VIN from the tag there. Actually by then I was just reciting it from memory, having done this once already in the DMV parking lot for their supervisor. But I acted like I was reading it, for form's sake.

My point is that, where I live, the police don't seem to care enough about this process to worry about minor details like VIN tag location(s). Probably the officer thought he had more important things to do, which is likely true. (I actually offered to bring the car to the police station, but they insisted on sending someone out to my house.)

Good luck,
Scott

P.S. The other funny part was that after the second time the registration was rejected, I forgot about the whole thing for a year until I got pulled over for driving with an expired plate, and then had no registration to prove that I owned my car. They sent 2 police cars that day - so it could have gone much worse.

Mine had a 'decal' affixed to the A pillar. And I mean decal, as in the one you used to have as a kid from a hand held clicker type label maker, and it passed fine.!

I have a 79 ROW, they also asked me where is the metal tag etc. I had to take it through a level 3 inspection, you know the one where they take the car in a garage, slam the door shut and tell you to come back in 45 minutes.

Anyways they gave us a "PASS" stamp and all was well. Just take it to get inspected and you should be all set.

Mine has one glued to the dash and the regular type on the latch panel.

Mine is missing, I was going to have one made and glue it on the dash? Maybe I'll just steal Ron G.'s when he is not looking?

I have no VIN tags on the car. I have one stamped in the front trunk just behind the gas tank. Takes a Cop every time I have to deal with the DMV. Pain in the a.. but I'll do it for the extra HP/tq ;)

best regards,

Michael

Where is the hidden VIN number on a 911? Believe that its under the passenger side knee pad or glovebox area? Believe that its stamped at least 3 places in the 911 body...
