Transmission Rebuild

I have a friend who needs to get his 915 transmission rebuilt.

Any recommendations?

And idea of cost?

Options:

1. Send it to JWalker (he has a golden rep on this board).
2. Send it to JW (he is a major contributor here).
3. Send it to Seattle (same as 1 and 2)
4. Do it yourself and learn (it is do-able).

I would go for option 1, 2, or 3.... you can't go wrong.

Cost-wise: My tranny was grinding in first gear, hard to shift into 2nd and I was quoted between $1.5-2.5K. The mechanics were correct, however with the quote.....unless they open the tranny, they could not correctly scope-out the entire work/damage>

I rebuilt mine. Good luck!

Well since it's not my transmission and I don't have time I won't be rebuilding it myself. I'll check out JW.

Gary Fairbanks in Norwalk, CT is a lot closer. Fixed a couple things on mine late last fall. I think he charged 650 flat for labor, and then whatever the cost is for parts replaced (he'll give you the old ones back, and explain exactly what he did)

Yeah I was checking out John Walkers website. It may make more sense to find some place in the tri state area that we can just drop the tranny off at rather than having to deal with shipping.

I would give Gary a call...he was nice enough to meet me in-between his shop and my house.

Also, if time is an issue, he can usually turn it around in 2 days.

another option is Reiser-Technik in upstate, NY. (Pelican user id jmreiser)
Joel did my transmission last year and it is perfect. He advertises in Pano and is one of the PCA Technical specialists for several 911 models. Highly recommended.
