best exhaust for Ca. smog legal 3.6 swap in a SC

I just sold the 3.0 out of my SC and I plan on buying a 3.6 from a 993. I need to pass California smog so I am looking for suggestions on the exhaust to use. I figure I can use all the stock stuff from the 993 except for the mufflers (thinking that they protrude to far into the wheel wells.

I could be wrong on the 993 mufflers but it would be great to hear what others have used...

I have a 3.6 in my 74 but that one does not need smog so I have SSI's and a sport muffler with no cat....

thanks in advance for your responses

Talk to Steve Weiner at Rennsport on look at the Instant-G web page. Both have the solution for you. I'm just a heartbeat behind you ;-)

Larry, aren't the SSI's a little restrictive for a 3.6?

The ones that I got were the ones made specifically for the 3.6.

Thanks, I will be sure to post what I find out. I don't think it will be a huge deal... I am kind of picturing something like a straight pipe that picks up where the cats leave off and feed into an early style sport muffler.

very curious to see what others have done though... To bad that California did not keep the rolling 30 year exemption in effect... my SC would be golden next year

Hi Larry:

AFAIK,....all SSI's are made with 1.5" primaries which are far too small for a 3.6.

I asked John Daniel (SSI owner) if he was going ever make any of these with 1 5/8" tubing, but he told me it was not in the works due to the cost of tooling and the limited market for those.

Larry:
I am most likely going to do the same upgrade. I live in the North Bay. I may need you for pointers on the conversion. I understand the power difference is like day and night compared to the 3.0 powerplant. If you do it yourself what has been your experience as to the cost besides the motor?

hmm... Ok which ever ones these are:
http://www.patrickmotorsports.com/cgi-bin/main?action=special&page=3%2E6L%20Conversion

and specifically on that page:

EXHSSI.911.36
EXHAUST HEADERS - SSI HEAT EXCHANGER SET - 3.6L ENGINE TO 911 - THICK HEAD FLANGE TYPE- MUFFLER SOLD SEPARETLY
$1250.00

they flow great... have not measured the size of the primary pipes but the system I have on my 74 flows well enough ... was under the impression they were SSI since that is what it says in the add... but guess I could be wrong... If anything it is lacking in low end so maybe more restrictive would be better

but I am really not concerned with what I have done but what is available for what I am about to do. The main question is what is available muffler wise to mate up with the 993 cats and work under an SC.

the link I posted above:

has everything you need. You are looking at roughly 1500 in addtl parts plus improved cooling which can be another 700ish depending on how crazy you go. I put an RSR cooler in the front bumper and a carrera cooler in the fender of my 74. It never runs hotter than 180... It ran much hotter with the 2.7

On my SC conversion I am going to just put a carrera cooler in place of the loop cooler and see if that is enough to keep it cool... if that does not do the trick I will put a carrera cooler in the drivers fender as well .... I really dont want to change bumpers etc on the SC..

If I dont get the info needed on the mufflers on this thread I will be sure to post it once I get the info... I am sure Patrick Motorsports has a solution to the problem ... just wanted to see what people had done here ... The SC is more of a daily driver so I am not looking to squeak out every last hp ... I figure that going to the 285 hp 3.6 over the 180 hp 3.0 will be all the boost in performance I will need for this car.
