OK got cams off what next
thanks guys for the help. The cam bolt came right off with a 1-13/16" socket. now the heads are off. I have a quick question on the 2.2 & 2.4 motors. I am to the point to where I can easily split the cases and put a 2.4 crank that I have. Is it worth it to put the crank in going to 2.4 (Zenith carb's) or keep it at the 2.2 (and why) one last thing, the reason that I took it apart was that I am putting on a new cam from motormeister, any suggestions on which type of cam?

You'll also need the 2.4/2.7 rods to go with the crank. Yes I think it's worth it but I'm biased. I assume you have a T so the E cams would best match your port size.

It is not quite as simple as just slapping in a 2.4 crank and rods ... there has to be a considerable amount of 'clearancing' done with a die grinder on the inside of the 2.2 block!!!
What cams are you getting? Your 'T' pistons may not have enough clearance, were you aware of that problem? ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I'm surprised Warren didn't say this. Do you have a copy of the 911 HANDBOOK? This may answer alot of your questions on which direction to go. Also talk to Lee at M/M he can help you with some of these technical questions. If your splitting the cases are you getting them decked, checking the line bore? Are you replacing the bearings?

thanks guys here are some of the answers.
Yes I do have the 911 handbook and have read it. I understand that it is not that easy but I am trying to figure out if in the long run it is worth it. I do have the rods, as well as a whole 2.4 motor with 2.7 p/c's that I am going to build a 2.7 next winter. The big question is is it worth the upgrade(understanding that I am going to have to do a whole lot more research on it)at this time. This motor is going to be used only for one or two more years. I had talked to Roy at MM and he did not tell me that I would have any clearance problems between the valve's and heads with the new cam, although it seems awful tight in there. One last thing. Some of my questions sound stupid to you guys but you got to start somehow. I've rebuilt Harley motors many times but never one of these. I figure anything that I screw up can be fixed and that is one more thing that you learn not to screw up again. thanks |

Well, you still didn't say which cam profile you are thinking about getting, and if you look at the comparison chart in the Handbook on page 189, you will see there can be a significant increase in lift over your 'T' cams. Some cases can be taken care of with minor flycutting of the pistons, but other cases require new or different pistons! Obviously, 'S' or JE pistons would give you the most flexibility in choosing a cam profile, but even 2.2 'S' pistons may need a bit of cutting to clear GE-60 cams with 0.031" more lift or GE-80 cams with 0.041" more lift than factory 'S' cams! I mention the piston clearance problem because checking with clay or solder on top of the piston in a trial assembly is not quite as trivial as in other engine designs, and Cometition Engineering can tell you in a minute whether flycutting is needed or not, or that a given combination won't work.

I am not sure which customer this is on the camshafts that he bought from us, but give me "Roy" a call and I will set you up with Lee Marks, who will answer all your questions and then some.

I talked to roy at MM today, he cleared a lot of things up. I am going to go with the solex cam. I am going to check some clearance issues that Lee asked for and then we will see.
