Future problems for 87 Carrera

Hi all,

I have an 87 carrera with 170k miles on the clock. What I was wondering is what possible future problems do I have in store? The engine seems strong so I am hoping that will last for a bit longer without a rebuild as long as I look after it. The bodywork apart from a bit of rust in the engine bay seems to be good.

Any possible issues I should be aware of, or anything that is bound to break sooner or later?

Thanks in advance

John

Has anything been done. There are many, many items that will likely need to be taken care of on a car of that age (not esspecially due to mileage but age)

Rubber everything
CV boots relube joints
fuel lines
Boots on front tie rods ends
Shifter bushings
Shifter coupling
referrence sensors
brake lines and fluid
Check the throttle to be sure it is opening all the way
Possible plugged CAT
O2 sensor
Cylinder head temp sensor
Bushing in steering wheel column
wheel bearings
rear spring arm bushings for sure
Probably front bushing
Sway bar bushing front and rear for sure
DME relay
How are the brake pads
Sorry about the list all the above can be done DYI........

Hi there,

Sorry I should have provided more information, the fuel lines have definatly been replaced since it started spewing fuel everywhere

I had a full service done with all the brakes etc done 2 years ago. Age is now taking its toll on the electricals.

My car is UK so doesn't have an O2 sensor or cat, guess that is one advantage

Should I be concerned about any rusting etc? There isnt too much at the moment.

I was thinking of major problems that might cost huge money to fix, I am planning on slowly replacing the electrical and sensors during the year since it wont be driven much. Wondered if there were any massive things I should expect

Thanks for the list, I will get them all checked when I get the car back.

I just rebuilt a 3.2 from an '87 for the track, and if I hadn't had to change the rod bolts, the motor wouldn't have needed a thing. I was absolutely amazed at how little wear there was inside. The crank only needed a little polishing, and I was back to std/std. If it isn't smoking at startup or under load, leave it alone. It'll keep on truckin'. My other one is an '88 which I commute with daily. 199k on the clock, no issues.

If you run into a tree, that would be a problem.

Other than that, enjoy the car. It will last a long time.
