Paint Guys - How do I avoid having this happen again?
I starting to prep my car for painting. I bought it knowing it had a horrible paint job, and I plan to do all the prep work and get someone to shoot it for me. When I bought the car it had a blister on the hood that was the size of a quarter. The blister has grown. I want to be sure I prep this correctly so this doesn't happen again. Can you tell from the pics below what the previous guy did wrong? The second pic shows the back of the paint "chip" that came off.
Thanks.

Thats the biggest chip I've ever seen!
I'd take the hood down to bare metal at this point. looks like the galv and the primer didn't get along. Could be alot of things done wrong during prep right before paint. I'm betting bad adhesion and water took it's toll. Clean it good then Acid etch primer, then your high build primer should make it stick.

I would check with local shops. Typically they prefer doing the prep work in house. It is unlikely they will guarantee a paint job if they did not complete the prep work.
One area where you can save is taking the car apart--bumpers, door handles, mirrors, glass, valance, rockers, bumper extensions, etc. The best method to paint bumpers, valance, extensions & rockers is off the car. The removal and installation is very labor intensive. Good luck.

I would let the body shop handle that.

In my case it was a combination of bad prep and/or incompatible paint. It all goes back to bad prep work.
We ended up stripping everything and starting from scratch...

They just finished priming my hood and it took them 8 acid washings to get anything to stick. The Dupont rep said that was quite common on older galvanizing. Seems to have some weird anti-adhesive property.
