Fan belt

New belt from PP for my 80 SC.
When I take out a shim it's to loose (more then a half inch at mid point) and when I put it back in it's way to tight.
What's the secret to this pulley madness Batman?

I have the correct # of shims on the pulley, inside and out.
But I guess not...

How tight is too tight? How many shims do you have?
Have you set it up where it is tight and then turn the motor by hand a few revolutions? I've been told that it will fit better after that.

Read the tech article on the subject. When turning over the engine so the belt will ride up on the pulley to adjust, DO NOT TAKE THE COIL WIRE OFF, follow the instruction. Ask me how I know.

Interesting - why shouldn't you take the coil wire off? I'm sure you're right, I'm just wondering why.

I do not want to disagree with you but I believe you are wrong about not pulling the coil wire.

I just did this. Thread ' tach pegged'.
Anyway, no tach problems before I turned the engine over with the coil wire off. Now the tach is pegged.
I'm going to have it checked by speedometer.com in Austin. I'll let you know.
Coincidence? I don't think so.

This may just apply to cars with CDI or DMEs.
