First modification/upgrade (stock speaker question & pics)
 

Can anyone tell me if these are the stock speakers in the rear deck in my '79 911 SC? They are a two way speaker but looks pretty old and the 41/2"-5" round speaker is torn on both sides. The magnet underneath says Boston. If this is the original what size could I use to replace them without any or little modification? Can I possibly use the existing mounting holes? Also, I tried to pop of the grill/cover and they are really stuck on there, maybe just years of being in contact with the leather.

They 'should' pop off and they don't look stock to me. My 82 SC has no grills, just perforations in the rear deck.

Definitely not stock when compared to my '86 coupe. The grills on my car are not nearly as deep. I'd keep the deeper grills so you have more options with regard to dimensionally deeper speakers.

Not stock. Boston Acoustics. (Sort of in the same vein as ADS or Visonic David plates. Good speakers. You might get some new surrounds or replace the drivers. (the grills should come loose from the plastic housings, then the drivers are mounted to the plate.)

I just replaced mine it was a 15 minute job tops. lift off your back shelf, and you'll be able to see clearance for new ones and see if those grills are screwed on from underneath or just pressed on

I found a pair of infiniti plates at Circuit City that would fit that size and installed them easily. I pulled the back shelf out of the car and it made things much easier to work with. The problem was my grilles would no longer fit. Nobody is ever back there anyway so I just left them off.

Those are my favorite speakers. I think they sound awesome.

I had to replace the foam surrounds on the woofers a few years ago. I got a kit from an on-line source and it was really easy to fix them. It even comes with a video on how to do it.

If it were me, I would fix those instead of replacing. Just another idea.

Dorschman, what size did you end up replacing them with? It looks like I could go with either 6 1/2 round, 4x6 (no grill), or maybe even 6x9. Only concern with the 6x9 is whether the basket underneath will be too big.

4x6 inches. I think there were screws holding the grill on with mine. I think once I had the shelf out and turned it upside down to see what they attached to I just unscrewed them and the old Boston Acoutsics came right out. They had totally dry rotted years ago. The PO must not have been a big music guy.

I could try to get a photo back there tonight if it would help.

I thought about making or having some grill guards made but have just been lazy about it.

How do the 4x6 sound? I was looking at Best Buy, they said none of that size come with guards. Did you give any thought to 6x9s?

The grill pops off and the screws are under the grill...four of them. Those are the 5x7 plates, and I don't think any speaker manufacturers make that size any more. Shame, as it was a great solution for narrow mounting depth situations. I had those BA's in my old 86 VW GTI...awesome sounds!

I just replaced the plates (same size but Sonys) last year in my SC. They were in the car when I bought it. I went with a 6x8 (aka 5x7)Blaupunkt that I found in Crutchfield. I use the rears for fill mostly, and the Blaupunkts come with grills that look great in the back on the 911. For fronts, I went for MB Quart 6 1/2" separates...very good sound. I am driving them with a pair of vintage a/d/s PQ10s. Holy smokes.

The trick part is that I designed the amp into the trunk area on a "quick release" basis. For the speaker connects, I used 4 pin trailer harnesses, and the power, ground and remote wires are all on pull apart connectors. The two amps and board weigh over 18 lbs, so I get that out of there for track and autox.

I've found a couple of 5x7s, but if 6x8s fit I'd do that instead. These grills are stuck on there like crazy, I'm trying to pop them off with a screwdriver without tearing up the leather back there.

I have a set of those out of my 930. They were HKs. I am missing them since having removed the rear deck shelf via my RS carpet conversion. Sounded great. Still have them on my shelf if anyone is interested.

may be time to replace them - tho good quality, no speaker lasts forever

if old, brittle, discolored, toss

Oh, I'm definately going to replace them I'm just trying to figure out what size I can go with, without much modification.

Both speakers are torn and you can hear it, but they work.

The infintiies sound fine. They are mostly fill sound as the front ADS and Kenwood sub under the passenger seat handle most of the sound. By the way my car has an ADS PQ-10 behind the kick plate! I learned a few things wiring that to the Becker head unit out of a Boxster and the Kenwood self powered sub.
