oil cooler (FINDING ONE)
I'm in the process of trying to find a front spoiler mount oil cooler for an RS project. All of the ones I've found in places like tweeks and performance are in the $800 range. That's way to much! I've heard somewhere that RX7 oil coolers could be used. Has anyone used these? Or can anyone give me another idea. The big thing here is the cooler size. The size needs to be 19"L X 4"H X 1 1/2 or 2"W. The height can be a little larger but not by much. The lenght also isn't to much of a problem but the width needs to be between 1 1/2 and 2" . I also need the connections at the end, not the top. I've worked out all of the other problems with the oil lines and thermostat. So if anyone has any ideas or has already worked out these problems PLEASE let me know.

I got this one:
http://www.**********.com/auxoilcool.htm Because these were back-ordered when I needed it: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/cooler.htm http://www.btinternet.com/~bgcmotorsport/oilcoolers.html I've heard (and I may be wrong about this) that you have to replace the small (1/2 inch?) inlets and outlets on the RX-7 coolers, which seems like a pain. Then again, I see a lot of guys running those coolers, so they must work. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe |

Try www.batinc.net They sell mocal coolers and they have a couple that can be used as a front mount. Haven't tried one but will eventually.

A lot of companies will try to convince you that AN-12 or AN-10 lines and fittings are OK, but the closest American equivalent to the factory lines and fittings are AN-16! Do not put a restrictive cooler on undersized lines in that scavenge circuit, or you risk wearing out the oil pump!!! Cutting corners on oil cooling sytem modifications is indeed a risky economy measure!

The RX-7 oil cooler is an excellent unit, about the same dimensions as you spec. However, the fittings do need to be replaced, and the internal T-stat removed. Any good radiator shop could weld the fittings on, cheaply to boot.

Is a Mocal cooler with larger (16 AN) fittings ok to use? Many places that stock Mocal products are able to sell you a cooler with the larger fittings, along with the hoses and fittings of the same size (16AN). Are the other coolers on the market (B&B, Lemke, and the "Factory 930 upgrade") using the larger (16AN) fittings?

Any, or at least all of the $700+ replacements (that I am aware of) for factory coolers, use 30 mm metric fittings.
And, yes, assuming you do your own fitting and fabrication/adaptation to the scavenge lines, AN-16 hardware will work just fine. h ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Is it possible to adapt a used Carrera cooler to a fender mount? They're reliable, efficient, and (relatively) inexpensive.

Be careful on buying used oil coolers.
I bought a Carerra cooler from a guy on the Rennlist. It was loaded with metal fragments. I took it to a radiator shop to be cleaned and thought it was cleaned out. Rinsed it a couple times with diesel to be sure, but.. As I am now tearing down my engine, all my mains and rod bearings are terribly scored. I have to think some of the crap from the cooler did this to my engine. Getiing a case cleaned out is an expensive process. Bill 72T-->S |

I have an Earl's cooler in my RS front bumper, tight fit but it works. The dimensions are just about what you describe, with -12AN fittings on one end. The oil temp. rarely gets up above 200 deg.F.
Beware of used oil coolers. Have it ultrasonically cleaned, preferably using hot cleaning liquid. Expansion from the heat will help loosen clogged metal (if any) in the cooler. Sherwood Lee |
