Adjusting 915 shift rod coupling!
Okay,
This may help one or two of you who might make the same mistake I did when refitting a new Shift rod coupling: When adjusting: pull the the lever 'BACK'-towards the drivers seat (as if selecting 2nd gear!) Now rotate the coupling in the opposite direction (which is counter clockwise as facing rear of car) Then tighten pinch bolt!. Finally I have the sweetest selecting gearbox I have ever driven (in a Porsche) ![]() It was that simple!!! I was pushing the lever 'sideways' towards the drivers seat and trying to keep the lever vertical as suggested in another tech article. I cannot reccomend Highly enough the benefit of replacing: the ball socket, shift rod bushing and shift rod coupling (or bushings). It will really "take the slop out of yer Box" Thank you again Warren for the suggestion yonks ago!. rgds Ben [This message has been edited by 86ragtop (edited 01-14-2001).] |

Ben,
What do you mean, pull it back as if shifting to 2nd? Do you mean to place the shift lever vertical, then move it against the left side (as in other articles), and then pull it into the 2nd gear position? How far in did you pull it? All the way to the bottom left seems excessive. Let me know. I've been messing with mine for a few months now, and it is improving, but not as good as I would like it to be as of yet. Thanks in advance for the info! Nick. ------------------ __________ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe |

Hi Nick,
yep as you suggested, or I did! move the gear lever all the way over to the left and whilst keeping it snug to the left move it back towards you as if going into 2nd gear (I am not sure how far is too far, but what harm can it do? it will either select the gear or not). I tried it, as I had been fiddling trying to keep the shifter too vertical (far forward) not expecting it to work!. But it now seems to work fine. I wish I had scribed where it had been originally but never concidered that it might be so hard to re -align. I have only test driven it a short distance but on outstart it seems fine. The only part I am not sure about is that they say in Bentleys: "Shift transmission into 5th gear. Push shift coupling boot back. Check transmission selector shaft for play. Some play must be left". I presume they mean whilst in Neutral?. As in 5th it is solid as all gears!?. I had problems selecting 5th/reverse until i tried this approach. Hope it works for you! rgds Ben ![]() |

Ben,
I have also had problems with this "5th gear rotational play" Try as I might, I cannot get it and I really don't see how you can. Once you are in the 5th gear gate, the springback mechanism in the shifter holds it very tightly between the metal holder and the spring pressure. There is no way that it could move laterally unless the spring or metal holding piece were removed. I did, one time, loosen the coupler when in 5th and then there was play at the coupler, so I guess thats what you want? Also, Ill try your method of adjustment. I would imagine that the rearward movement towards the 2nd gear area would be limited by the shaft coming up against the coupling at the end of the splined shaft. I had previously moved in this direction about 1/2 way with some improvement. Maybe going the rest of the way is what I need to do! Thanks again, Nick. ------------------ __________ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe |
