Where do I buy a cotton car cover?
I'd like to get a dust cover for my 993 while it is parked in the garage. I am looking for a custom fit cover. Pelican only offers other materials and not a plain cloth cover. Do you know where I could get a custom fit cotton cover for the 993? Red would be the preferred color.

I'd use a tyvec cover for indoor use, very light weight. I also use the stormproof coverking, its does a great job when the car sits outside. Car stays dry and if water does get beneath it, the cover allows it to dry because the material is very breathable. You can order one in red, black or grey.

I have the light weight cover from Porsche. It fits very well. Not the cheapest, but I would buy another.

Thanks guys!
How much does the cover from Porsche run and is it cotton? I don't care for tyvek. Looks too much like a clean room bunny suit! As usual, this is as much about looks and childhood memories as it is about functionality. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the red satin cover Drivewerks sells. ![]() George |

Unfortunately most of them are not custom fit covers, they are just covers that fit any car. No mirror pockets and no tight fit. I could not find a cotton custom cover for the 993 anywhere on google. Thanks, George |

The printed phone number is 213 652-4800. Too bad they made great covers.

That's rich. The area code for BH hasn't been 213 since the 90's. But that goes to show you how good their covers were. I had a red one and it of course faded just with the garage door open half a day now and then. But, it was still good when I sold the car. I'll wager the cover was 10 years old. Why can't we just get those?
I think CA Car Cover is what took over when they went away, frankly. |

BHMA is long gone. But one of the guys that owned it (last name of "DeFrank" or something like that?) now owns/runs another car cover company. I think it may be Cal Car Cover, as Milt mentions.
I also like 100% cotton car covers. Although not quite as much as I used to, given a lot of the newer materials out there. 100% cotton has a lot of advantages. 1) 100% cotton is incapable of scratching paint. 2) It is the ultimate breathable fabric. Which is why undershirts are 100% cotton. 3) It is just about the perfect thickness, good protection, but not too bulky and can be washed in a home washer and dryer. 4) Tends to get better and softer the more it's washed. 5) Pretty reasonable life, even if used outside you'll get many years out of a quality cotton cover. It is harder to find them these days. Most "cotton" covers aren't 100% cotton, but a cotton/poly blend. The poly part is of course not as easy on the paint. But from what I recall, you can still find 100% cotton, I think Cal Car Cover may have it. The thing that has turned me off a bit from cotton is that while it is true 100% cotton won't scratch your paint, a cotton cover quickly builds up with dirt, dust, silt, whatever. Cotton seems to like to hold that stuff, and it goes right through the material. That stuff will scratch your paint. Some of the more modern fabrics seem to be better at staying cleaner. |

P.S. Milt, I had the same 10 year old red "two toned" BHMA cover! Front half looked perfect, back was light pink from being exposed to the sun from time to time when the garage was left open. But other than the color, the cover was very durable and fit like a glove. Top quality.

I got my covers from Covercraft. They fit perfectly and work well. The first cover I bought was the "Dustop" indoor cover. It seemed pretty soft, but it's made of that material that seems to be paper based like so many covers including the official Porsche cover, which I also have. I bought a Noah cover for trips and it seems a whole lot like the dustop cover so I use it indoors as well.
I don't know of an all cotton cover. Covercraft sells a cotton blend Flannel cover, but they also have this- cotton face cover Apparently the surface that touches your car is all cotton and it has a polyester backing. There must be a reason that they don't just make a cotton flannel cover. edit-and I also see it's available in Red! Last edited by SLO-BOB; 11-24-2006 at 06:44 AM.. |

I have 3 covers and 2 of them are laundromat only which is a PITA. The one that I insist my wife use every day at her job if she drives her Boxster, is a light weight grey synthetic and doesn't seem to hurt the paint if (a) the paint is clean and (b) the cover is clean. She works in the harbor, so the gulls are always drive bombing the thing. That stuff is nasty, so I wash the cover a lot. Bird crap really doesn't do well with German fabric tops. Or is it vice versa? ![]() If you guys find a good deal on lightweight, home washable covers, I'd like to get a couple. |

I looked at the California Car Cover website. That is the same guy, Jim DeFrank, that used to own BHMA.
Cal Car Cover still makes the 100% cotton cover, they call it "Softweave" Cotton cover I'd imagine it is pretty much the same as BHMA used to sell. |

Scott, can Pelican do "specials"? My car is a 74 IROC replica with the really big RSR tail...can you make a cover for that? The Pelican cover wizard doesn't address those possibilities. Thanks MP
