81 voltage regulator?

I fixed most of my electrical problems (gauges, etc) but I am get a pulsing of the gauge lights and headlights. It pulses with the RPM of the car (ie. idle = slow pulse, 3000 = fast pulse). I did a search of this topic and found some ideas on testing the regulator to see if it is bad. I found on the left side of the engine bay, what I think is the regulator. It is very small (1 1/2" X 1 1/2" or so, and is a silver box with a 3 pronged male connection sticking out of it. It also has what at first look seems to be some kind of ground wire attached to the box. A three pronged black plastic female connection is plugged into the box. This connection has three wires connected (brown, black, red) and the plastic is marked with DF, D-, and D+ I think. I know this has to be either the regulator itself, or some kind of grounding unit for a regulator that is attached to the alternator itself. Can anyone tell me if I am looking at a voltage regulator or some kind of ground? I followed the testing procedure that was discribed on this BBS (I believe it was a post from Warren) an if this unit is in fact the regulator, then I have a bad unit. I have not seen any pictures of a Porsche regulator that looks like this unit, so I am second guessing myself now. Thanks for any help you can give, Paul

Paul,

What you describe is the Voltage regulator, and the following electrical diagram at Pelican shows the interconnection with the alternator:

That is the voltage regulator. There is a picture of it in the Haynes manual.
I have the same problem with my 1980 SC.
I couldn't find the post from Warren.
How do you check the regulator?

On my '83, anyway, the regulator is inside the alternator. I'm not sure if it's the same for all the SC's. I've now forgotten what the silver box on the left side of my engine compartment is - it may be a headlight relay or something.

All of the ground connections need to be checked to see if clean and secure, first! At the alternator frame, at the relay/regulator/CDI console, at the transaxle crossmember, and at the battery!

Determining whether the regulator is bad or OK is a multi-step process. If the system Voltage is above 14.5 Volts, it is definitely the regulator. If the system Voltage is below 13.2 Volts with the engine running, then the alternator needs to be removed and tested at an alternator shop. If the alternator tests good and the system Voltage is still below 13.2 Volts with engine running, then the regulator needs to be replaced.
