Porsche exotic stereo systems

I was reading the posting from the guy asking what people like to listen to while they drive and I was just curious if anyone did any exotic or radical stereo modifications to their car. Currently i'm redoing the interior of my '78 911 and was wondering if anyone had any Ideas. I think I will take the back seats out for 2 10" woofers. My focus is on sound quality so lemme know what you think.

I have 2 12" woofers in a custom enclosure that sits beneath the rear seats. 3 Nakamichi 2x300 amps. 1 for each woofer, and 1 for the receiver, which is a Pioneer with a 51 disc changer mounted in the hood. Sony component speakers front and rear. With a Cab, you gotta have some wattage!

Huey, Thanks for the site... Actually I have spoken with the fella who owns that car via email before. That site prompted me to work on the stereo for my car actually.

Motion, How you like that setup?

Anyone here know someone interested in a pair of alpine component speakers that fit perfect in 911 doors? I also have a tape deck (alpine) that has the option to add a CD changer and a small amp to drive the spekaers.... Lemme know!

Adam

I'm interested in this as well, as I have a need for more volume and sound quality in the car. I have a Targa so things can be a little tricky. Motion, I'd LOVE to see a pic or two of your setup. I've been without a sub since I bought the car and I really miss it.

Hey skull, If you really don't want to go custom look or have to pay alot for box construction, check out www.caraudioinnovations.com they advertise in Excellence aswell and from what I understand they make a great box that fits between the front and back seats for a pair or 8" subs (i think). Check it out. I would have done something like that except I wanted a custom look and decided to use fiberglass to keep weight down. I also wanted larger subs (10" or 12").

I've got the Car Audio Innovations enclosure in my 73 911. I'm very happy with it.

Here is how my 79 SC is set up:

Head Unit: Eclipse CD player/stereo/ with 3 RCA pre-outs. IMHO the sub pre-out is important because you can adjust the gain on the sub without fiddling with the amp. Porsche was thinking when they designed the stereo mounts, a DIN chasis slides right in the whole!!!

Amp: Orion XTR 300.4 This is a 4 way amp that is used for the door speakers and bridged on the second channel for the sub. I placed it under the drivers seat, fit nicely.

Door speakers: Orion XTR 5.25 components. I placed the crossover inside the door and mounted the tweeter above the woofer. Very easy install.

Rear Speakers: None. I like a total front stage.

Subwoofer: Orion 10" XTR in an Orion matched sealed box. The box sits in the rear seats when folded down. This is removable when I need room or want to cut weight. The down side is it can slide around during sharp turns.

I am considering the Innovations sub box, but I hate to add all the weight. Plus I cannot figure out how they seal that up to be air tight...?

I hate to say it, but the more I drive the Porsche the less stereo I end up listening to unless I am on open highway. The engine is just such nice music

Good luck!

Weight was a major issue in designing my subwoofer enclosure. I removed the backseat sections (they are for sale if anyone is interested) and all the sound proofing. I will add some Dynamat Heat Shield sound deadening (lighter than stock porsche) to the back seat section and then create the base of the box with fiberglass. The top and profile work will be done in 3/4" MDF (It will be heavy but I think it shouldn't be too bad). The MDF will then be Glued and screwed to the fiberglass base and the entire enclosure will be removable (although not easily) and factory seat mounts will be used to secure the box in place. I'll send pictures when I'm done. Oh ya, the piece de resistance, will be haveing the Porsche crest embroided on the black carpet between the subs... sweeeeeet....

Although it's not too exotic, I mounted a pair of 6x9 three way sonys in a pair of standard (Crutchfield) small enclosures that sit on the floor behind the front seats. They are not held down by anything except by the seat backs, so they can easily be moved for those rare days when I need to stick some kids back there. They sound great, and aren't visible from the outside. I need to upgrade the front door speakers to better match the efficiency of the Sonys, and get a better amp.

I have Car Audio Innovations 10" subs (I think) Sounds great, almost too much bass. Sometimes I turn the bass down, sometimes I turn it up to annoy Honda racers ;-)

This setup pops right out when I auto-x.

I can send pics as soon as my home computer is up again.

I'm looking for, how shall I put it, "tight" bass i.e not boomy, but powerful. I've had an active 8" bass tube across the back of my coupe before but it sounded horrible, no extension, too directional and not powerful.

I prefer the simplicity of mounting an easily removed enclosure on my back seat or folded seat backs and I am wondering, should I get 1 x 12", 1 x 10" or 2 x 8"? Partnering equipment will be Pioneer CD changer, JL Audio 6" component with dash top mounted tweeters and and Soundstream 4 channel amp, channel 3+4 bridged for the woofer. Music will be rock, house. No classical.

Thanks for any pointers

930fan,

I have a sealed 10" Orion in the back and it is plenty of bass that is clear and tight.

Down side is the sealed enclosures are not that boomy and you do not seem to get the same lower back massage or "pounding" as in vented enclosures.

If you want deep you need a ported enclosure. They sound great if you spend the money for a good 10" sub and amp... I think 10" is plenty for small coupe, convert I would go bigger though.

In other cars I have done Rockford Fosgate and Precision Power stuff, and I like this Orion stuff better. Plus the Orion amps are still made in the USA, Fosgate went overseas when they got the BestBuy contract. Boston and MB Quart also make some very good stuff, but is too $$$ for me.

930fan,
If you ar looking to punchy base you should stay below 12". 10" woudl be ideal I think. The car audio innovations box should work well for that. Unfortunatly the box is not ported and to get DEEP base out of any speaker as small as 8" or 10" is difficult in a sealed box.
What pillow is saying is correct: Orion is one of the best. Stick with their XTR line that's some good stuff.
If anyone is interested in an Orion Xtreem 400 2 channel stereo amplifier I am willing to part with it. It only has about 30 seconds play on it and I still have the original retail box and the good part of a 90 day warranty. Asking price is $300.00 (slightly neg.) Let me know if you need any info.

I don't know how exotic, but I have 5.25" MB Quarts in front. In the back I have a combination enclosure that houses a 6" pair of Quarts, tweeters, and in the center, a 10" sub. Amp is mounted in the boot. The enclosure can be taken out easily- but when in the car really cranks out the tunes!

Joe,
Could I possibly get some pictures of that enclosure you have in the back for the MB Quartz (NICE SPEAKERS). Looking to get a rear stage in my '78 Coupe.

Thanks

The previous owner (drug dealer) put in an Eclipse touch screen receiver with cassette and a CD stack in the trunk. This pre-amp out went to a Kenwood passive equalizer that divided the signal to two Eclipse amps. The 500 Watt runs the 8 Polk Audio speakers in the sides and another Eclipse amp runs the two base tubes on the back shelf. I cannot take any credit for it.

I have a total of 700 watts, 400 to a 12 inch Infinity sub, and 150 each to a set of MB Quart 6 1/2 Q front speakers. I went overboard on the system last summer, but the sound is great. I am looking to build a different sub box though, a less obtrusive one. Hope the pictures load
