Oil Check Hot ,cold running idle or not
 

Well very confused on how to check the oil in the 3.0 L 1982SC.
There is no decal on it and I've seen a decal that says, check when at 140 Degrees at 900 rpm but that is for for 1974 to 77 and 1978 t0 80 and 1984 to 89.
My 911SC is a 1982SC 3.0L and there is no decal for oil check in the marcket.
Can someone help on this

Check when hot (180F) on level surface, at idle...

Are you positive on this?. Is there a Service manual someone can looka at it?

Follow GrantG's advice. Regardless of year or lack of decal, car should be at warmed up temp and on level surface and at idle. Just run your car until the temp gauge is in its normal position when warm--don't worry about the exact degrees--then park on level ground and check the dip stick.

Does your oil temp gauge have numbers or just white marks. If it has the white marks like my SC, then "operaing temp" would be roughly when the needle hits the first white line after rising above the white "field" at the bottom. This is according to my owner's manual. If you look at the oil temp gauge from an extreme angle from the passenger side, you can see numbers hiding behind the guage trim ring. The first white mark is 90 deg. C. This is what my owner's manual says is the normal temp. Let the engine idle for about 30 sec. then remove the dipstick. wipe it clean, put it back in for a moment and check the level.

I have been told by an old timer that so long as the oil is hot, you can check it with the engine off so long as you do so immediately. The reason I asked was that on my 72 there is so much going on inside the tank when he engine is idling that splash seems to make the dipstick hard to read at times. YMMV.

That sounds like you might have alot of blow-by from worn rings?
