Heater controls in '88 Carrera
 

When I turn on the heater (floor lever), the windows start to fog up, even when I direct the air flow to the windscreen. I recall reading somewhere that there is some trick to manipulating the heater and fresh air controls so as to avoid this happening. Can someone enlighten me? I have no owner's manual for this car, and Tweeks has had it back ordered for ages. Does anyone have an owners manual they would be willing to photocopy for me? I would of course pay all costs.

You'll find information on this by using the search on heater, but here's what you're up against: It would be easier to drop your engine than to get the heater to work in any reasonable fashion. It doesn't make any sense. But here's basically the configuration want. Put all three levers right..you'll get cool air to the window. That's for emergency vision, as you'll quickly freeze if it's cold.
Now, if you've built a small campfire in the passenger seat, you can just put the second and third levers to the right, leave the top one left, and it will defrost if you're moving. Or something like that..Pull the two between the seat up too. Or leave them down, hell, I"m still trying to figure it out.

All of these levers and fans are darn confusing!
Why did porsche ever design such a comlex confusing system?
I learn the sequence of heating/cooling then a few month later forget it .
I may make my own labels and attach them so it will be an easier process.
Just thank God that most of the time I only use the A/C.

I keep the owners manual open to the page showing the dash controls, ussually its on the passenger seat for easy access. E-mail me and I will fax you a copy of this page.

Has anyone tried the Rain-x anti-fog treatment for the interior windows?? Might be a good alternative to a real defroster.

I've often used Rain-X on the outside of my windows. It's almost a necessity here in the northwest. After this mornings drive I pledged to at least try the anti-fog version. I'll let you know.

Rob Fix just faxed me the page from the manual. For defrosting it says fresh air off (top lever left), middle lever left (any fresh air that does come in goes to the floor), and bottom lever right (heat to the window); and of course, raise the floor levers. If the putting the top lever to the left cuts off the fresh air, it should not make a difference where the middle lever is, but I guess I'll try it.

If everything fogs up, you probably are not getting any outside air. Move the top lever on the dash control all the way to the right to get fresh air thru the front air intake.
I found it easier to learn to fly than understand the 911 heater system!!
