I think its too much and too close

Hold the can 10 - 12 inches from the surface and spray in a smooth motion, applying several light coats. Several coats is the key. Sand down the orange peel and re-spray.

What did you use for a primer?

Orange-peel is usually caused by something on the surface that is keeping the paing form adhering properly.

I used a self-etching primer as it is the best bet when trying to paint aluminum.

Thanks--I scuffed the already painted surface with 180 grit then painted. I am not painting directly on aluminum. Do I still need a primer over the scuffed paint surface?

Try this: Assuming that the surface is prepared and primed.
Decant your rat can of paint in a bucket of hot water;Make sure the nozzle is clean and clear of old paint; shake well and wipe off excess water; wipe clean the surface to be painted with lacquer thinner; be sure to paint in a location that is within the temperature range on the can's instructions; warm the surface (wheel) to something near the temperature of the room or warmer; spray the paint close enough that the paint lands on the surface "wet" and watch for the paint to "level" or flatten out but not so close that it begins to build-up and run; Keep the can moving from the center outward; lightly sand between coats with 1500 grit paper to remove any dust and complete the painting in a single session. That means don't wait a couple of days to apply subsequent coats of paint.

Hey, that is a great idea of dropping the paint can in hot water, I usually do a lot of my engine work in the winter, and the my shop is not the warmest place. I will give it a try, I usually put the paint can and parts in front of the heater prior to painting, never though of hot water
thanks
