Footwell Blowers On?

I took off the kick-panel on my 89 911 to check out the blowers down there. I just rebuilt my heater blower in the engine compartment. It has a fan speed on the center console. Its speeds are 0, 1, 2,& 3. Right now when the red levers between the seat are up the aft blower runs and the footwell blower is on at its slowest speed when the switch is in the 0 position. If I move the switch to position 1, the speed stays the same. If I move the switch to 2 or 3 the speed increases respectivly. What about the 0 and 1 position, is on and no speed change correct or is something wrong? Maybe if it is the switch is the problem? Can anyone tell me?

Thanks,
Mike MIller

Well no one helped me, but I kept digging. I've figured it out.
First there is no switch on the inside of the console in the #1 position on the fan speed dial. Answering the reason for no change in the speed at the 0 or 1 position.
Second the footwell blowers stayed on somtimes after the heater levers were pushed down. (Someone else had a problem with the blower staying on after the key was turned off, I think this will fix it.) This was the (heater blower)relay sticking in the engine compartment over on the left side under the cover. I opened it up and lightly sanded the contacts with a micro pair of tweasers (sp). It fixed the problem for the short term. A new relay for the blower is about $125. Hope this can help some one else

Mike,

Correct me if I have this wrong, do you have a lever in between the front seats?

Which lever are you talking about?

I have a dial in my '85. My footwell blower motors don't turn on until I turn the dial to #6. The motor in the engine compartment turns on (I think) as soon as My dial is at the 1.

I will keep in mond about a dirty relay in the engine compartment, should a similiar issue for mine spring up. It seems weird to run all that wire from the (front) battery to relay in the engine (back) to the blower motors in the footwells (mid).

Well you just never know.

Thanks
Nick

I've got the manual heater control in my '87, and I recently had it apart. You're right, Mike, turning from 0 to 1 does absolutely nothing, and that's clearly how it was designed. 2 is medium speed and 3 is full speed on the footwell fans.

Nick, sounds to me like you've got the automatic heater control, so you don't have the levers beside the parking brake to control the engine heater fan and open/close the flaps on the hot air tubes. Instead it's all done automatically depending on the temperature in the car and your heater control setting.

Thanks Eric,
It sure looks funny with no switch in the 0 or 1 position. Have you looked at you footwell blowers? Do they turn on at a very low speed (unnoticeable air movment) when you move the floor levers up without turning the blower speed switch out of the 0 position?

I've looked at the footwell blowers, but I didn't notice if they come on when I pull up the floor levers only. Should they? Could it be that the engine heater fan is pushing enough air to slowly turn the footwell blowers?

No. They are on for sure on my car. I can pull the little fuse by each footwell motor and they will stop. You would probbly have to remove the footwell cover to check them, they are so low and quite. If you ever do let me know.

It just so happens I was working on mine yesterday. Pulling up the floor levers doesn't turn on my footwell blowers. I believe they only come on if the floor levers are up and the heater control is on 2 or 3, and I think that's how it is supposed to work...

Actually I might be wrong on that. I think they actually come on when the heater control is on 2 or 3, regardless of the floor levers. But they're definitely off if the control isn't on 2 or 3.
