911 Dashboard Lights
I have a recently purchased 86 911 Targa. When I drive at night, the only lighted items on the dash are the gauges. The headlight knob, heating controls, etc. are unlit. The only other lit thing is the foglight knob. Is this normal, or are there dashboard lights for other parts of the dash that are burned out and need to be replaced?

It is very likely that some of the bulbs have popped and others may have a dark coating on the inside of the glass after over 20 years of service.
I too thought about ways to change the design etc. But when I just replaced all by new, the difference was amazing. So I'd go for that route too; pull all the instruments (see the tech articles at Pelican) and replace all the bulbs ! Instruments should definitely be readible at night (with lights on that is...) |
Sounds like things are fine. I just checked mine and they are as you described. Although, I have a rear defroster nob next to my fog light knob that also lights up.

My headlight and heater controls do not light up but all of the knobs over to the right do. Front and rear fog lights, rear defroster. Sometimes they will not come on but I just twist them tight again and there they are.

If you'll do a search on this, it's been discussed before, not all that long ago. The bottom line is that most things are unlit. Be careful when reading responses to make note of the car that the respondent owns; things changed as each new generation of cars was built and more lighting became the norm. A Carrera had things an SC didn't and a 964 had things a Carrera didn't, etc.

Recently went through the interior lights on my '83 SC. Lights found in all the instruments, 4 in the Heating/Ventilating control on dash, 1 ashtray , fog & defroster switches, glove box, and the floor mounted auto heat control unit. Definitly nothing in the light switch. Have not got around to checking the AC switch or anything in the center console

my sc has 4 lts in heat/vent controls - one on each corner - 3 were burnt when i got it likely due to how much of a pain they are to change.
