R Gruppe North / South Meeting
For those of us that love the pre 1974 911.
The R Gruppe is having there second annual North / South Bash in Cambria CA. May 11,12,13. There will be over 100 early cars, A word of warning! Most of these cars are not stock, our gruppe is dedicated to "Sport Purpose" built cars and it's not a PCA Concours, these are "Street Rods". So if the chance of seeing and hearing 100 or more early 911's will but goose bumps on your fore arms and a chill up your back like it does me then come on over for the show Randy Jones, R Gruppe 1971 911 [This message has been edited by RLJ (edited 01-17-2001).] |

Gee, when I read about the R Gruppe last
summer in Autoweek, I was excited. I tracked down some email addresses and asked if we could create a Colorado faction as well. The response was kinda of odd, to the effect of .. "The first step in getting qualified as an RGRUPPE potential member is to send me a few photos of your car and a brief dual-bio of both your car and your views concerning street/track race attitude. That is one of the first steps before I forward your material to our RGRUPPE organizer for final review. " I felt, whoa maybe I better cool my jets a little. Perhaps I was NOT the right stuff after all. Still looks like a great place to be in May! The Excellence article was cool too. Perhaps just a wrong impression inadverently given. Bill 72T --> S |

I hear there will be a nasty flu virus outbreak in California on May 10th...(Hope to see ya there.)
Where do we go for event and membership details? Web link? Speaking of hot rods, I've been gawking at Seinfeld's 911R (real one) outside of my window all day today. Wicked. One of the L.A. R-Gruppe guys -- Chris something? -- was just over there too with his orange 70 911S. Anybody know who I'm talking about? I have talked to him a few times but forgot to get his email or phone number. He lives in the West LA area somewhere. This is his car: ![]() Chris C. 70E not quite totally stock... [This message has been edited by campbellcj (edited 01-18-2001).] |

I think we need to recognize the desire for different groups to protect their individuality and essence and not be offended by that.

Mackgoo I guess what I was trying to
say in my earlier message was, the R Gruppe sounded like a bunch of my type of Porsche kindred spirits. These guys do tasteful but effective performance mods to their pre '73 911s, then get together and hang out for a weekend or more. Cool. Do you honestly think those 100 or so 911 owners had to submit photos and their views about road/track attitudes before coming together last year at Cambria? NOT! There are quite a few pre-73 911 zealots here in Colorado. A similar grouping here would been fun to put together. Just might do that too. I just was caught off-guard by the request. I hope I can still be a R Gruppe member in spirit. Bill 72T [This message has been edited by zotman72 (edited 01-18-2001).] |

Although Cris Huergas is the best person to directly address any questions regarding the R Gruppe, I can speak as an individual who also happens to be a member of the R Gruppe's newly formed Northwest Chapter. The R Gruppe is a club that has been waiting to happen for a long time. For driving enthusiasts of early (pre '74 slim bumper) 911s with "sports purpose" mods, this club is a chance to share experiences with like-minded individuals, not a concours crowd - more like a "lightweight hot rod 911" crowd. If membership were open to all 911 owners the club's whole purpose for existing would soon be diluted, and it's focus would be lost.
There has been a tremendous response of interest in the group since the first gathering in Cambria, CA last year, and I'm sure Cris has been overwhelmed with responding to everyone while keeping his original goals for the club intact. I believe everyone here is welcome to stop by and visit the gathering in Cambria this year (hotels are booking fast). If you have an early 911 like Jack's, Carlo's or mine, you might decide after meeting the members that you want to join - that's what I did. Cris is a great guy, very generous and sincerely desiring to include those with similar cars and interests in the R Gruppe. Bill, it looks like your car in the gallery with it's S MFI mods would fit, now do you like Steve McQueen? Seriously, this group is a blast for all who really love to get the most out of these early cars and will give you a new perspective on how you might modify your 1972T. Maybe you could email Cris your gallery info. See you in Cambria? Randy W |

chris c,
i think it would only be appropriate that you post "spy" photos of seinfeld's R. we expect full documentation from our pelican agents to keep us informed of such a rare beauty. if it's the ex-matsuda R, i'm gonna have to take the mission upon myself. seriously, can you tell us more? please...pretty please...anything. bob 68 911L |

Does anyone know if R Gruppe has a copywrite or trademark to their name? If not, what is to keep Bill or anyone else from starting their own R Gruppe?

With the article in Excellence and Autoweek the intrest in our club has exploded.
Last month I flew down to Emmeryville,CA. for the R Gruppe un-official meeting at EASY Auto Parts. Right off the get go I felt at home with these folks! There were no "EGOS", no mines bigger than yours attitude, and everyone was intrested in the other guys project. This is what Cris and Freeman are trying to protect, somebody with a "BIG DISRUPTIVE EGO" will not be tolarated nor membership renewed. In that respect maybe a bit upity but if thats what it takes to maintain a "Family" with no fighting or bickering then he has my blessing! The SF and LA gruppes were both a small gathering of FRIENDS, where everyone was equal. Most of the members I talked to don't want the PCA bull. Last year at Cambria the prepping for the car show was for everyone to simply "Wash" there car. No q-tips or microscopes it's not Parade, its a show and shine. Randy Jones 1971 911 |

Randy thanks for your explanations
and now I think I have a better sense of how your unique R Gruppe came together. Having suffered through a concours event this past year to get my PCA/RMR challenge series points and eventually win my class, (amassing points for track, rally and concours events), I know exactly why you disdain that concours BS. Never again will I subject myself to it. I also know what you meant by Porsche FRIENDS, I have several tight 911 buds, --we can NOT go more than a couple days before we have to touch base on where we are at on our P projects. We are in PCA primarily for track events which our region excels at. We have five road courses within two hours of Denver which is amazing. Our RMR region lives and breathes the track which is probably not the norm elsewhere. However, we go to the tracks in between DE events just because we need to now! Finally, I am considering a visit to Cambria this May just to listen to that sound of so many early 911s. Bill [This message has been edited by zotman72 (edited 01-19-2001).] |

Greetings gentlemen,
I was told about this particular message by one of our member and felt that I needed to address some of your questions about R Gruppe. First and foremost is the message from zotman 72. I agree with you that the response from that particular "gruppester" you inquired about was a bit cold and may have given you the impression that we're a bit arrogant and too self centered about "our gruppe". Rest assured that this is not the case and i want to clarify to all those who may gotten the wrong impression about this club. The first step in being a member is to get a hold of me via e-mail or by phone. I'm a real easy going guy to talk to on the phone or via e-mail. But I do make a point to have some interaction with all prospective members over the phone or via e-mail just so we both can get a good idea as to what each others expectations are about part of this club. Its a rather personal attention I like to extend to everyone whether or not they become members. I do have a membership app that I mail to all prospective members which also request for a couple of pictures of your early 911 (for the R Gruppe family photo album) Those early 911 owners who came to Cambria weren't all official members at that time but many of them have since become members. No I didn't request them to submit photos and their bio before I accepted their registration forms to be part of the Cambria event. There were no requirement for anyone to be officially affiliated with any club to be there. The only thing I required from them is to be able to have fun and acquaint themselves with other fellow early 911 enthusiast that weekend. And yes, it was fun indeed and I would welcome other early 911 owners and their cars to come to this years event. Just keep in mind, this is all about having fun and enjoying the company of others who shares the same passion for the early 911s. If anyone wants to reach me via e-mail, please direct them to: rgruppe911@hotmail.com Thanks everyone and I hope to see and meet most of you in Cambria this coming May. sincerely, Cris Huergas R Gruppe co-founder Nor Cal Chapter p.s. for those of you wondering about that Seinfeld's 911R. From what I can gather so far, it belonged to one of our members and was on display at the Dunkel Bros. swap meet last year before it was sold to Seinfeld. It was also on the cover of my #2 newsletter, R Gruppe News. |
