H-5's versus H-1's & 4's

I just bought a pair of H-5's for my '81 and was wondering if this conversion will be an easy R&R?...or, did I make the right choice of lights? I paid $260 for the pair. Furthermore, what is the difference between the three? I know the H-1's have two bulbs, but what are the differences on the lens? Do you recommend a relay between the switch and light? Any suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Umm, a big YES on the relay. As soon as Warren sees this post, I'm sure he'll answer all the other questions-I always get the different types confused.

The H-5 come on the later U.S. Carreras 87-89 at least maybe earlier, they have single bulbs with two filaments in each bulb. The bulb comes away from the lens after the lens is removed from the socket, there is a threaded plastic keeper that holds them together. The inside of the lens may be cleaned with the insertion of a non lint type cloth and some alcohol, water tends to remain in the lens after cleaning and fog.
The H5 bulbs are lower watts, if I remember correctly the brites are 55.
Sometimes even though the filaments appear intact they may be burned out.
The H4 are the European units
Hope that's a little help.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get the H-1s.

I have them now and they are a nightmare to get adjusted properly and they have a weird grounding problem that causes a blown fuse every once in a while. Plus they do not seem that bright for the wattage, I have 100 watt high and 55 watt low (two filaments), still suck.

When I feel rich i am going for the H-4s. I know nothing of the H-5s, sorry.

I just put the Euro H-4's on my '83 SC, and they are awesome! There is a very clear difference between them and the original factory lights. I currently have the lower wattage bulbs in them, but may upgrade in a month or so (I will see how I like these first). If lighting is your only issue, go with the non Euro H-4s, and they will provide similar light for much less money. The Euros look better, so I spent the extra $ on them. Teh bulbs are the same, only the trim rings and glass are shaped differently.

The H5 lens has nipples to mate to US style aiming devices H1 & H4 do not, the H5 bulbs are available in higher wattages I had 100 watt high H5 on a car which I have since sold.
